Do we give mullen a raise and extension?

May have already been asked, but as he basically paid for himself in additional ticket sales, it seems like the money should be there. Paying him less than what we ever paid Crooms seems unjust. I'd put a big buyout clause in there as well.

I want Mullen to stay as much as anyone, but it was only one year. Keep him hungry (I don't think this will be a problem) but get to a bowl first and then go to the bargaining table. If other teams start calling after going to a bowl, then give him the raise that will be deserved along with the big buyout.

We need to show a commitment to Mullen NOW. Let him know that we value him while others aren't calling. He'll remember it when they do.

We re-structured both Stansbury's and Cohen's contracts to the four year max. I'll be shocked if we don't do the same with Mullen.

I think we most definitely give an extension, and probably a ~300K raise to 1.5Mil.

Honestly, I might think Mullen might not think he deserves a raise. I know Mullen turned the team around, and that was what we brought him in here to do. But I think that although the team played well, we left a lot of opportunities out on the field, and he seems like a very self accountable man, and will take the blame for things that the team does or doesn't do. I think at some point this season, maybe after LSU, the thought may have crossed his mind that there was a chance at a bowl game, but we didn't get there, which is why I think he may be upset at himself for not getting a bowl out of this season. That being said, I think in 2 years, it will be very clear that he will deserve a raise. We get Florida off the schedule, we get Bama, OM, LSU, and SC at home. We have a very manageable non conference schedule. Don't want to get ahead of myself, but with the rate the talent is coming in, and with the parts we will already have in place, we should get 8 or 9 wins that year. That would constitute a raise.

Still on the low end compared to all the rest. And if he does well over the next couple of years, we will have to up the ante even more.

I realize that we were better than expected but we still had a losing record. I don't want him to go anywhere but we've got to do better than 5-7 to start forking out more dough.

I don't think people realize we only bumped Croom to 1.7 mil AFTER the bowl. He didn't make that before.

Now after we go bowling next year, by all means take Dan on past that mark.

to reach the max of 4 yrs allowed by state law. Wouldn't give a big raise though, not yet. I think there will be a time to give a big raise, and that time is probably after year 2 or possibly year 3 (whichever year Dan takes MSU to a bowl). For now, I'd give him a small raise of maybe 250 to 300k, no more. Keep Dan hungry, but show him some appreciation with a "small" raise (I'd love to have a 250k raise, how 'bout y'all?). Use some $ to reward good assistant coaches and to replace others if there is room to upgrade. Whatever we are paying our OL coach, in isn't enough. Be smart and a good steward of our athletic dept dollars today with an eye on the very near future. Better start saving right now for the hellacious raise it will take in just a couple of years to keep Dan around when one of our incestuous SEC rivals comes calling for our coach. If Dan Mullen has the success I think he will, we will have to more than double his salary in no time flat to have a Chinaman's chance of keeping him in Starkville, right Jack?

like was mentioned above; we'll be able to afford it with increased ticket sales this year (a new record), and combine that with what should be a demand for season tickets next year like we have never seen before.

Quote from Byrne in September

"As far as John Cohen, (we're) very pleased that he's here at Mississippi State as our baseball coach, and told him when we hired him I understood the importance of keeping his contract at four years for him from a recruiting standpoint," Byrne said. "And he's certainly well on his way to bringing our baseball program back to where we expect it to be year-in and year-out."

I'm sure the same "importance of keeping at four years" will be relevant with Mullen as well.

Additionally, Cohen's salary is much more competitive with top baseball coaches. Mullen salary is #49 in FBS, and #11 in the SEC. I can't find exact details for Cohen (or other's, for that matter).

I won't be shocked either way on the raise, but I absolutely expect an extension.

As long as he continues to make this program better, he should continue to get raises

If we can get a larger buyout in the contract, I'd want to give him a decent raise with the extension now. I'd rather wait until after next year, as I think people will start really pursuing him after year 3, and I'd rather have the longer term contract in place then, but I'm a little worried that LSU might come calling next year. (Which is why I was really pulling for Miles to implode against Ark; no way LSU would go after Mullen right now). Two years isn't much of a resume for an LSU, but with the job he did this year with our Croomtastic talent, you have to think an 8 win season next year would have people believing and it seems like there's a pretty good chance that LSU will be looking. Plus, I'm guessing there will be a decent chance of MSU sliding back a little in 2011 (losing 3 OL, McPhee, Wright, others?), so if the right offer comes along, Mullen may feel like he needs to take it while it's available.

If Dan Mullen is the coach Byrne wants leading the MSU program (which seems to be the overwhelming consensus) for the foreseeable future then you lock him up now. Show him the commitment MSU will make to him, raise his pay the SEC average or more (at least 2mm per year). Put in a huge buyout clause (richrod style) to protect MSU's investment if Mullen decides to go elsewhere. If we wait till he's on top, he will shop himself and MSU will lose him.
