According to the city of Oakland, each of the 776 police officers currently employed at OPD costs around $188,000 per year.
I realize there's a lot more cost than just the salary, but $188K/year is a LOT of money for 1 police officer. And OP4 is right, this is a ploy to try to get the budget cuts restored. If the police chief follows through, he should be one of the officers that gets cut.

Consider how much insurance must cost for a police officer, and I doubt this means they're getting big dollars. Far less than what it would take for most people to put up with the citizens of Oakland's ******** (see last weeks riots).

I doubt they are self-insured, but I guess that's a possibility.

Notice he didn't list gang-rapes. I guess they could stop selling alcohol on Sunday at that would stop the gang-rapes, freeing up more time to respond to stolen license plates.

...just not dispatch an officer right away, at least that's how I take this:

"He says if you live and Oakland and one of the above happens to you, you need to let police know on-line."

Nicely done.
