There’s a reason why professional teams have GM’sto manage roster construction and contract amounts.
If you’re spending 22 million on a roster,it only makes sense to have someone in charge of that.
Now we’re in a situation of 2 combo guards and no true point and about a half dozen wings and 4 centers, so this is very much and imbalanced roster.
Should Pope be to blame for this ?
I don’t see why not.

UNC has a new GM

And you can see the instant upgrades of their roster

I was curious on this as well and not sure what other programs were doing.

But if were gonna add NIL as a factor, it makes sense to have some sort of GM/president for the basketball program or even for all of the sports programs.

If UNC sees this as important, then UK should follow suite. There should be no basketball program out there doing something to better the program, that we arent doing.

Mike Pratt would have been perfect for this position.
He was devoted to UK and the basketball program

Yes we do. I think Jim Master or someone along that line of background would be perfect.

Yes. I was baffled that Pope seemed to go after every talented big out there but didn't seem worried about the PG spot if Lowe got hurt. Now we have 3(talented no doubt) 2 guards who are going to have to learn to be lead guard during the season.

Yes, I believe a GM would be beneficial. Seems that it would lighten the load on the coaches. Lets them coach instead of dealing with NIL.

Man if Pat Riley wasn't so deep into the Miami organization he'd be perfect. I would love to have Nazr Mohammed even though he's the GM for Oklahoma City Blue I wonder if he'd come back here and be our GM? Give me Tayshaun Prince even though he's vice president of basketball affairs for Memphis Grizzlies I wonder if he'd come back to be our GM? Those would be my few picks for the position and I bet they would do a wonderful job.

Doesn’t matter with pope coaching. He should be the GM he’s not a championship level coach and we don’t have time to wait for him to start to get it

Yes. I know these guys were chosen based on fit, but we got the least talent return on our nil investment than anyone in the nation.

If you lead the nation in nil payments, you should have the most talent. At least top 5. Instead we have top 20 talent.

I know he chooses based on fit, which i actually like, but you cant massively overpay for these role players. You just can't. Our best spend is jq and we're only going to have him for a portion of the year.

So yes we absolutely need a business driven person calling the shots and negotiating deals because its pretty clear pope massively overpaid some of these guys.

The difference between us and Duke is they don’t have to beg to get top recruits and seems like we do.

They just got Cam Williams, I’m like we have to go to the end of the earth and back to get a stud.

The Stokes fiasco is a prime example.
It seems like nothing comes easy for us.
Hate to say it, but our brand with Pope is not the same.

But they are Duke and this is UK, with Nike backing them they can hand pick their players. I’ll support the coaching staff and hopefully in a season or two Pope will have this roster fit figured out. He’s learning on the job and that’s fine

Yes we do. Mark Fox is no real GM and he’s not bringing anyone in FR.

Anyone with common sense will do. You don’t spend $22 million on a bunch of role players and projects with no star players. You also have to have a backup PG that you feel comfortable giving minutes to. Half of this board can figure that out.

We signed two pure point guards.
Acaden Lewis decommitted April 11 and screwed us because this year didn’t have a lot of good pure point guards available and they were pretty much all off the table at that point. Considering what was available Mark Pope pulled off quite the magic truck pulling Denzel Aberdeen out of thin air as a consolation prize.

I don’t want a GM because a GM’s recruiting decisions would SUCK compared to what we have now. This staff recruits with an eye towards team building and maximizing their actual (non crack smoking) (non 22 million dollars) budget like few others ever have.
