....and that's fairly hard to do.
I have thought about this lately. In a year like this one, when it looks like State is headed to at least a minor bowl, I think it directly benefits State more to have two in the BCS than it hurts State to have a competitor win the NC.
It could mean the difference between the Liberty Bowl and Cotton Bowl. Or the Gator and Music City. Or God forbid, the Birmingham bowl vs. any other bowl.
Any team that is playing for the national title is just in a different league than us. Period. Bama gets who they want for the most part (Brassell remains to be seen), and this year, they are getting that tight end that we would like to have, but that's about it. They are just on a different playing field, recruit nationally, and we really need to outrecruit the bottom 6, including Ole Miss, to move up in the ranks.
So personally, I'd rather see Florida in the National Championship and another Eastern Division team in a BCS game. That keeps Meyer in good standing, gives State an opportunity at a good bowl, and keeps our closest neighbors out of it. This year? I think the best case scenario, barring us beating Bama, is for Bama to get hot, have some teams lose, and get two in the BCS (whether that is the NC or not). Those teams, at this point, will have to come from the West, and while that hurts us in recruiting directly against those two teams, it potentially puts us pretty high in the pecking order of good bowls.
It's been fun to see the SEC going on a NC winning streak, but I was definitely pulling against Bama last year. I would rather State do well in a weak SEC than do poorly in a strong one.
