The idea of building a college football program is going the way of the Dodo. I don't think anyone that is involved, especially those that are involved for a possible football career, expects staying for 4 years. No need for the schools themselves to believe that either. The focus is going to be can I get playing time now and what money can I make. Unless your one of the historical top 20, I would not give long term anything. Even if we paid someone 15 million a year, they would be looking at other options. It would be hard to blame them. The expectations are all over division 1 and no one can ride it out by making a good living with stability.

If there was ever a time for some good old fashioned collusion, conferences getting together and ending buyout clauses would be a nice move. Don’t get me wrong, every ounce of it is their own damn fault, but with the way these contracts are getting structured these days, they’re giving coaches zero reason to work

I think we are in the “storming” phase of the new alignment in college sports. It’s going to take a few years to settle down into the new normal. Everyone is trying to figure out what that is right now by trying things and it’s pretty chaotic. Who knows what it looks like when the dust settles?

We need to see a couple of Athletic Directors fired for signing these contracts with the dumbass buyouts - we see you Ross Bork
Or we need the state university systems to override the stupidity of the individual universities by not approving a hire when these buyouts are in place.

I totally agree, why do you have give a Coach so much money to buy him out for dismissing or firing him. Lsu proves my point*

I have a friend who is a Florida librarian. She told me “I wish I could get fired for doing a mediocre job like Kelly. I would love to get half that kind of money.” In other words, this is a screwed up world called college football.

Jerry Jones said he would never pay an NFL coach near what college coaches make because college coaching is so much harder. I think the biggest differences are the recruiting and the roster management.

In the NFL, the head coach is pretty much just a coach and the organization handles the other. In college, the head coach is the head coach and the GM. That’s changing a little as schools are creating positions to manage NIL, roster funding, and revenue sharing payouts, but for now, managing the roster, attaining and retaining, etc., are on the coaching staff.

Who will be the first big program to go cheap on a no name X's and O's staff and spend every other dollar on the best GM group possible? GM group = managers, lawyers, recruiters + funds for players.

I think they will shorten a bit. Extended contracts used to be a big deal in recruiting...allegedly. A short contract could be used to tell recruits that a school wasn't committed to its coach. Maybe it still is an issue, but any recruit paying attention should know coaching changes happen often. Plus, the players can just leave, too.

So, the only real purpose of a long term contract is to attract the coach in the first place, or to entice him to stay. Maybe some of that will be replaced with huge signing and retention bonuses.

Aren't we seeing some big schools hire a football General Manager recently? What are those guys doing? I guess just portal evaluations? But yeah, college football needs to move to the NFL model. The coach coaches and the GM handles contracts and roster management. Players need to make more and coaches need to make less.
