Baseball- last conference title was 1989
Basketball- conference titles in 1991 and 2004

Baseball- 1 West title the last 20 years
Basketball- 7 West titles since 1994

Baseball- 14 Regionals, 4 Supers, and 3 CWS the last 20 years
Basketball- 8 NCAA Tourneys, 2 Sweet 16's, 1 Final Four

Both are extremely similar- baseball gets in the Tourney more because of the strength of the SEC

Shouldnt the goal for both programs be make the NCAA Tourney and have some success in a few of those every few appearances?

The Big Ten and the Big East essentially don't exist in the sport.

Its also so much easier to build a good program in baseball. You don't need good facilities or great tradition. You just need a good coach. So while our past success in baseball (which is far greater than our past success in basketball) cannot really carry us, it shouldn't matter.

that we were one of the top 5 baseball programs in the nation during the 80's while our basketball program was one of the shittiest. How about listing the accomplishments of our baseball program starting during the Clark years andconcluding the year thatCohen arrived on campus, pretty impressive. Do you truly believe that our tradition in basketball is anywhere close to ourreputation in baseball? Cohen took over a team that was two years removed from the CWS, the tradition and resources are available for us to compete with anyone year in and year out in baseball if we have the right man running the program. Cohen may be the man, but he better get things going soon. Do I hold our baseball program to a higher standard than our basketball and football programs? Yes, most definitely.

and other Southern teams. Less than half of the bids to the NCAA Tourney in baseball comes from the power conferences. You have many more stronger mid-majors like Coastal Carolina, Cal-St Fullerton, and others that play into it.

You have mid-majors pounding SEC teams in baseball- and it's been the strongest conference the last 5 years or so.

I posted accomplishments in both sports for the last 2 DECADES...quit acting like a Mississippi Rebel Bear in 1995, thinking that because Archie had them winning in 1970- they should still have that level of a program. The dynamics have changed tremendously since then.

they are really apples and oranges...plus I couldn't give 2 ***** about Baseball as a sport. Basketball, on the other hand, is my favorite sport to watch(all levels).

1985? How much has it changed since we made the CWS 5 years ago? Before Cohen's arrival, we had made 3 CWS appearances in the last 10 years, most coaches would be happy to take over a program with those RECENT accomplishments and the fact that we hold almost every attendance record in NCAA baseball does not hurt either. Add to that the previous success of our program and you get the definition of athletic "tradition". Understand the concept now?

For a national title.

It just depends on whether the fan bases demand that level of success.

Bianco needs to get his **** together, and so does Cohen in my opinion. Both schools should always be in the conversation for hosting regionals. Not hosting a regional should be viewed as a disappointing year. Both coaches get paid as top 15 coaches In the country, the results should mirror that.

Here are my current expectations.

Baseball Expectations:
Super Regional

Basketball Expectations:
Just make the tourney.

Football:

Gator, Peach, Outback, Cotton Bowls

The biggest thing to me is consistency. You can't expect anything really big unless you are doing it every year. I think its tough to expect Stansbury to coach them up to the sweet 16 if they are on the bubble or barely get into tournmanet. Once basketball starts makingthe tournament then I will bump them up to Sweet 16 status. To me sweet 16 is good enough and where we should be long term. We have some really good talent in basketball and football in that 5 hour radius. Baseball is different to me because I really don't know much about recuiting but I have super regional expectations because thats just where they should be at with coachingfacilities and fan support.

...SEC football and baseball are roughly on the same plane....where .500 in league play means you have a pretty solid team and anything above .500 puts you close to the elite category.

In SEC hoops .500 means nothing (see this year), and you can be a very mediocre team and finish near the mid point of the league.

Can't compare SEC hoops and SEC baseball.

a commitment just has to be made to it. Mississippi needs to upgrade it's facilities. State just needs to take advantage when we get the chance. Stansbury blew some real chances to elevate the program higher.

...considering (since 1992, i.e., the last 20 years) the baseball team has never been as close to a national title as the 1996 basketball team was. In fact, if you want to push it back 30 years (to 1982) the baseball team still has been as close to a NC as Richard Williams' crew exactly one time (1985).<div>
</div><div>Baseball is not a major collegiate sport. It's barely on the radar, just above track and field. Our basketball team is much more important despite it's lack of tradition because basketball gives a small market team a legitimate shot at a national title. If we made the Final Four again, the economic impact would dwarf making the last four of the CWS.</div>

College baseball is fun to watch in person. I cant bring myself to watch it online though...i cant even bring myself to sit thru a whole MLB game on TV.

College baseball is a distant 3rd and maybe its 4th in terms of major college sports since ESPN has a dedicated main page for Lady basketball, but nothing for college baseball. Lady basketball is also televised nationally and regionallyduring the regular season while college baseball is regionally televised...when its televised at all.

Here is a new rule for me-I dont have expectations for programs/sports that lose money. I can have hopes, but not expectations.

b/c 2 of the 6 power conferences don't exist like I stated before.

Less than half the bids to the basketball tournament come from power conferences as well. Tons of mid majors in basketball too that are making an impact. Just look at the last 2 Final Fours.

My expectations are roughly the same in all 3 major sports.

Baseball: make a regional every year, super at least 1 in 4 attempts.
Basketball: NCAA's every year, advance to 2nd round half the time, advance farther 1 in 4 attempts.
Football: bowl game every year, NYD bowl half the time.

Do I think we will do these things? No, I understand there are down years and nutty events in all sports all the time, but that is what I expect.

In the words of John Correro, "Who gives a flip"

Don't get me wrong, I love going to the Dude and watching the Diamond Dawgs..... But if the atmosphere was the same, then I would be just as happy as watching a game to tiddlywinks, as long as one of the players was sporting an MSU logo.

Booze + Grill + Friends + MSU anything + Booze = Fun, Fun, Fun!....(I meant to put Booze twice in that equation)

Ironically, the one thing I like about baseball is that it's sooo boring that a single heckler can legitimately effect the game.

Not only is it boring, but the MLB drains the talent level of Div1 baseball down to that of nearly a JUCO level sport. I'm obviously exaggerating here, but your definitely not watching the best 18-22year-old baseball players when you watch college baseball.

That's how I feel about basketball.
