You don't hire him because he's not qualified or ready for this level of a job
Comments like this are hilarious to me. People act like you need to be some kind of genius to be a college football coach. You ever hear these guys talk? Most college football coaches are complete dopes. You need a guy who knows football (check) and a guy who is a leader (check). Hire Terry.

I agree we should expect to beat Rutgers. The more important point is the 2nd part, getting the players to play in and win the bowl game. That would tell me everything I need to know about Terry.
So in the fantasy world where you’re the AD, you’re waiting until after the bowl game to make your decision? And beating a MAC team makes you determine you’ll offer $15 million/year to someone that wouldn’t command a third of that?

I like TS. What is there not to like? But i can’t shake this feeling that hiring him would be like hiring your favorite uncle to run your fortune 500 company. He’s been there a long time, he loves the company and everyone likes him but does he have what it takes to get the job done? IMHO.

Again, it's about getting the players to play in the bowl game. That is the important part. If he can do that, Terry is the guy. No question.

The fanbase has completely lost their mind in regard to Terry and I already fear the impact it will have on the (lack of) support for the new head coach.

I'm actually a little more "old school" when it comes to bowl games and think it's bullsh*t how many players sit out, especially now that they're getting paid. That being said, given the shift the program is making, the upcoming bowl game is at the very, very bottom of the list of priorities.

Yep. It's insane. Had I been there on Saturday night, I would have been chanting "Terry, Terry" along with everyone else because I'm thrilled that he's getting this opportunity and making the most of it. I love that he wore the Joe pin. I hope he comes out in a shirt, tie, and whale pants against Rutgers. I hope he does what we should do on Saturday and beats Rutgers, then keeps this group together and goes out and wins a bowl game.

None of that has any impact on if he should be our next head coach.

This is kind of where I am. I was there Saturday night when the crowd was chanting to hire him and couldn't quite join in on it. I am grateful for how him and the team have rallied, but salvaging a couple wins in a lost season should probably not be what decides the future of the program.

I'm going to support whoever it is and plan on going to all the home games to root them on, but we need to know what all the options are before just making a hasty decision after we finally had a good game.

Alternatively, I think there's a better than decent chance he's on his way to VT in a couple of weeks, and if that is the case, I don't think it's as detrimental as some will make it seem. Most coaches on the staff will follow JF to VT the same way most coaches on the future HCs staff will follow him to Happy Valley.

Tell that to the seniors and players that will be playing the last football game of their lives.

Bowl game? Opt outs will begin the minute the Rutgers game is over. No senior on the two-deep with any chance of playing in the pros will risk injury to play in a meaningless bowl.

What makes it meaningless? Why play in the Rutgers game, then? Or Nebraska? Or Michigan State?

I certainly appreciatevTerry's love for PSU, his honesty and his efforts thus far. No doubt the players really like him and have given full effort. But, the Hire Terry Smith signs were too contrived, coupled with MRobs pronouncement. It all seemed so scripted. Not impressed with that
If no homerun hire then Chesney is my choice and if he turns it down, give Terry a shot.

You think the entire stadium chanting "Terry..... Terry...... Terry" was contrived and not spontaneous?

Its an extra-game that does not factor into conference standing or the chance to win a national championship (not on the table I recognize). It may have value for younger players to get a leg up on next year, but if they are gone zero value. Absolutely meaningless for those prepping for the draft. Why would Allen and Singleton risk injury to play in the GameAbove Sports Bowl in Detriot against Ohio or Western Michigan?

There was a time not long ago where it was unheard of for a player to sit out one of these "meaningless" games. Players now are much more selfish, and the behavior gets acceptance, and even enthusiastic approval from a broken sports media who loves to push the "college football players are victims" narrative, even now that they are being paid!

There will be a total of 41 NCAA Division I FBS college football bowl games in 2025, plus the 11 games of the 12-team College Football Playoff (CFP). In contrast, in 1980 there were 15; in 1990 there were 19. By 2000 there were 25, You can see the trend. This increase is nothing; more than a cash grab by various social structures (schools, conferences, towns, etc).

As the number increased the prestige of bowl games diminished. Now with the CFP they are virtually rendered pointless. They may have value to young players or those who will not go on to play professional football. But for players who have a future in professional football, the risk/reward is too big for this kind of contest.

I didn't say he has to be a genius
He couldn't win big games at the HS level...that was his reputation despite countless advantages at Gateway. He's worked for Franklin and Rhule who can't win big games.

You only like him because of ties to Joe

If he tells Kaytron or DDS to play in a bowl game he's not looking out for them.
