Newsflash girls. You're getting a scholarship to play a sport. You're expected to show up for games. And showing up 15 minutes early for practice isn't getting around the 20-hour rule. It's being sure you're ready to start practice on time and not 15 minutes late. Link

Wow.

Complaint 1. "Asked off for a weekend"

Really - you are a college athlete. You are expected to be at every game. That's not too much to ask when they are returning a free education at a prestigious private university.

Complaint 2. "Asked off for a presentation in a class."

I actually side with the coach here again, even though she relented under pressure. Playing a sport requires a commitment, even if you are a student first. Sometimes you don't get to do the extra student stuff because you are an athlete.

Complaint 3. "Cut player for missing games to attend class."

Again, you have to prioritize things when you are a student athlete. Why schedule a class during known practice times, or why not make prior arrangements when there is a game.

Complaint 4 "Arrive 15 minutes early may have made them over the 20 hour rule."

BS. Arriving 10-15 early for things is good practice for life.

Complaint 5: "Not honoring former coach's scholarships."

Scholarships are for one year.

Here's the 615 version of what happened.

They liked the old coach.
Old coach was fired.
New coach was hired.
New coach is different than old coach.
New coach yells at kids.
New coach doesn't allow things that old coach did.
Players complain after a 21-30 season.

I agree with you on arriving early to practice, but on several of these, the coach comes across as kind of a ***** (especially the player who wanted to visit for a weekend with her husband headed off to war).

Certainly this is one side of the story, but treating other people poorly over time usually comes back to bite you in the ***. Otherwise, if you are gonna act like Bobby Knight, you best produce like Bobby Knight, and 21-30 ain't producing like Bobby Knight.

Yeah. And I know I'm probably going to hell, but this made me laugh.

And Smith apparently at least once divided the team into workout groups with names such as "aborted fetuses" and "booze bags."

You can believe it or not but when my daughter played for Millsaps, studying for a big test or one on one academic tutoring sometimes took priority over practice time. She never had to do it but some of the young ladies who struggled in the classroom did miss practice once in every blue moon. However, study hall was a requirement then and is where she is an assistant coach now so student-athletes have no reason to do this unless they are just damn lazy.

Girls play sports? While the coach seems to be a tyrant, in the long run it's good for the girls. Behind every successful man, is a woman who's able to support his career by making sure supper is ready when he gets home, is a lively guest when they go to the boss's house, and can keep the children in line while the man concentrates on his career.

Showing up 15 minutes early for practice shows the girls that you ALWAYS be prepared 15 minutes early for when the husband comes home, ready for a good meal, footrub, watching sports, and keeping up her looks for the times the man has a little hanky-panky in mind.

I think the problem is we are thinking in terms of mens sports. For women there is no next level in sports. Softball doesnt make the school any money and is just there to fullfill a legal obligation. Sure everybody wants to win, but getting a good career is going to be the priority.

Asking for the weekend off may be pushing things a bit (unless there's some sort of emergency), but I really think that their academic work should take priority over playing or practicing the sport. If that's their real reason, and not laziness, then they should be commended rather than criticized. I wish football and basketball players had a bit of that attitude ... most don't seem to care at all for academics.

Haha. It's a good thing there aren't any female posters on this forum. You'd be unmercifully tortured.
