Does anyone else feel that NCAA is at some sort of crossroads in their existence

It just appears to me that they have become a toothless lion that`s not capable of controlling what they`re suppose to be governing.and that fact is becoming more PUBLICLY obvious everyday. They`ve always enforced their rules selectively and never been reputable to those of us that follow college sports closely but I see them deteriorating rapidly to a joke in front of the country in general.

High profile problems like Camgate and even less publicized(although it did make national news) things like Havens` mom and are going to force the university presidents to make a move in my opinion. Anybody else think the NCAA is about to have to do some serious damage control to retain some appearance of being legitimate?

they are more like a committe of the group of schools. I think that has resulted in it's powers being able to be manipulated by a member school(s) who want to use it's power for it's own gain.

Now the problem is, that if the NCAA were autonimous and therefore LESS able to be manipulated, the fear of it would be even greater.

Kind of reminds us of another organization.....the US government. OF the people, by the people...against the people at times.

And the iternets are another thing they are completely incapable of handling.

Gravedigger, I'm referring to the parts of the NCAA that investigate and make rulings on compliance and ametureism.

I think the NCAA has just as much authority as they've always had.

The NCAA can and will go after other schools for similar infractions as Auburn/Cam and the other schools won't be able to do anything about it. Doesn't matter if they cry, "But AUBURN got away with it, why not us?". Doesn't matter if they threaten to sue the NCAA for letting Auburn go and punishing their school.

The NCAA has always used selective punishments, and recently punished a big time program in Southern Cal. Everyone will forget Cam and Auburn just like they forgot Clarett and Ohio State, Tee Martin and Tennessee, and multiple others.

Unless forced to go after Auburn because FBI evidencePUBLICLYimplicates AU, I truly believe that Slive and the NCAA will pick one of the smaller SEC programs to go after--Ole Miss, State, or Kentucky--and use that school as an example that Slive and theNCAA are still "tough on crime". Just like theyhavealways done. If MSU keeps itsnose clean, then it will be OM or UK.

They know the best players get paid, but they make more money off keeping them on the field. So, do they suspend them and potential hurt their product, or keep them on the field and maximize their exposure/investment etc.

If the NCAA ever wants to actually regain control they will implement the following new rules:
  • NCAA punishments follow coaches job to job. (If Pete Carroll came back to college football)
  • They'll suspend kids if the parents fail to provide documents.
  • Hold schools responsible for the actions of boosters.
Until they start doing those things, they'll always be a toothless lion by choice IMO.

doubt. However, you have to remember that they did spank USC pretty good (is the appeal over yet because they signed a pretty big class?) and they move slow as ****. My worry is that they will overlook whatever they can in regards to big name programs unless the media gets a hold of a story like the reggie bush deal. They have UNC case (media found some pretty damaging stuff w/ regard to Blake, the agent and players) and the AU casino and Camgate scandal on their plate. If those two blow over w/ no repercussions, the NCAA will be a complete joke. Kiffin is basically thumbing his nose at them right now. In '10 they punished USCalif, USCarolina, UNC, UGA, Bama, and to a much, much lesser degree OSU (WTF?????). What they do in the next six months to a year will tell a lot. It appears that recruits think the NCAA is toothless given the very good classes signed at AU and UNC despite the looming investigations. It used to be schools suffered during the speculation period (wasn't that MSU's case?) AND after the punishment.

The reason I ask is that this may be a conference-driven issue - not the NCAA itself. I'm sure there is some sort of dues structure or profit sharing agreement the NCAA has with the conferences, but if I were to guess, there is 10x more $$$ held by the conferences themselves (just talking football here) due to the giant TV contracts. The NCAA may need the conferences more than the conferences need the NCAA if their leaders want to continue their comfortable existence. If that's the case, you are never going to see the NCAA nail a powerful program for something major unless they have to (i.e. uncovered by the media or investigations by other organizations like the FBI, etc.) I'm starting to think that it's the Mike Slives of the football world that foster the environment we currently are in.
