Keenum — Keenum! — throwing some barbs toward Ole Miss about their mascot situation. 7 minutes ago via TweetDeck

Surprised Dan Jones has not weighed in on the "Ring Responsibly" campaign yet.

I should state here that I am officially for no mascot or an invisible one, but since neither of those is an option, I am going with the bear, simply in hopes we get a live one and he eventually takes the arm off a Spirit poster posing in front of his cage for a pic.

It must have been a sight on Tuesday afternoon - Jerrell Powe's Chevy
Tahoe traveling down Interstate 55 packed full with five football
players weighing a combined 1,350 pounds.</p><div class="articleflex-container">
<div class="articleflex">
<span class="adlabel-horz"></span>
<div class="ad_ArticleFlex"><banner position="ArticleFlex_1"></banner></div>
</div></div>

They were rumbling down to Jackson to sign autographs and meet fans
during the annual Rebel Reunion at the Mississippi Trade Mart, where an
announced crowd of 800 gathered to signal the start of football season.</p>

NCAA
rules prohibit schools from paying players to come to such events, but
Powe loaded up a few of his buddies for the 2 1/2-hour trip and they hit
the road on their own dime.</p>

Also in the SUV were cornerbacks
Marcus Temple and Jeremy McGee, along with defensive tackles Ted Laurent
and Lawon Scott.</p>

The main similarity: All play defense.</p>

Why
no offensive players?</p>

"Guess they had a team meeting," Powe said
with a grin.</p>

Though maybe just a coincidence, it could also be
seen as a telling sign of what to expect from the Ole Miss football team
this season.</p>

After losing the vast majority of the offense that
won 18 games and two Cotton Bowls over the past two seasons, this year's
team figures to rely heavily on its experienced defense.</p>

UM coach
Houston Nutt spent several minutes talking about the defense, happily
introducing the five players and even letting Powe say a few words to
the adoring crowd.</p>

"They've played a lot of snaps," the third-year
UM coach said. "I'm really excited about that side of the ball."</p>

As
for the new offense? Nutt breezed quickly through that part.</p>

"I
don't want to bore you," he explained. "because you're not going to know
a lot of these names."</p>

That slightly subdued tone was much
different than last year's Rebel Reunion, when more than 1,200 fans
packed the Trade Mart. During those heady days, Nutt's face was on the
cover of Sports Illustrated, quarterback Jevan Snead was a Heisman
hopeful and the Rebels were a preseason top 10 selection in many
national publications.</p>

That's not to say there aren't good
expectations for this team. In fact, most of the fans who stood in line
to wait for Nutt's autograph believed the Rebels were still in a good
spot as a program.</p>

During Nutt's decade-long tenure at Arkansas,
he earned a reputation as a coach that could sneak up and win a bunch of
games despite having little in the way of preseason expectations.</p>

"They
used to say that (former Alabama coach) Bear Bryant could take a bunch
of average players and beat a bunch of great players on any Saturday,"
said Brandon's Danny McMullen. "I think coach Nutt has a little bit of
that in him, too. He's the best coach we've had in a long, long time.
Probably since coach Vaught."</p>

As is customary, Nutt took several
minutes to answer questions from the crowd after he was done speaking.</p>

Most
wanted to know about recruiting or about a certain player's chances of
contributing this season.</p>

But one man got up and simply shouted
two words.</p><p style="font-weight: bold;">"BEAT STATE!!!!"</p><p style="font-weight: bold;">The crowd laughed and Nutt
nodded, undoubtedly thinking about last year's 41-27 loss to the
Bulldogs in Starkville.</p>

While second-year Mississippi State coach
Dan Mullen has talked about the Egg Bowl rivalry at every opportunity,
Nutt has taken a more subdued approach to the rivalry.</p>

But after
last year's loss and several intense in-state recruiting battles -
including several that are ongoing - Nutt is beginning to warm up to the
competition.</p><p style="font-weight: bold;">"Yeah, I'm with you," Nutt told the man.
"Absolutely."</p><p style="font-weight: bold;">Nutt had an extra bounce in his step every time
State was mentioned, even if the topic had nothing to do with football.</p><p style="font-weight: bold;">When
baseball coach Mike Bianco mentioned sweeping the Dogs in April, Nutt
might have been clapping louder than anyone in the building.</p>

And
if the Rebels are going to get the revenge they crave this November at
Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, it'll likely be because of the defense.</p>

That's
why UM defensive line coach Terry Price told Powe and his four buddies
to be careful when they jumped in the Tahoe for the trip back to Oxford.</p>

"Their
music might be loud but their speed will be slow," Price said with a
grin. "There's a lot of talent in that car."</p></div>

Yes Keenum did take a shot at UM mascot, but the theme is centered around the fans. It's a shame that some anal wart beat writer slants this gathering to sell papers.

Every school's coach pumps up the faithful with rival smack, I have no problem with that.

when you bring the Presidents/Chancellors into the mix, it gets a tad creepy.

What is creepy is an opposing fan following <span style="font-weight: bold;">your</span> beat writer's "tweets," and then coming to your message board to post about it.<span style="font-weight: bold;"></span>

I follow a lot of the SEC beat writers, not sure why that is creepy to you.

I also read newspapers that are not based in Mississippi, that must be positively bizarre to you.

Just realize it's going to be talked about at every official MSU gathering so you won't have to post about it EVERY time it occurs.

Let Mullen have back to back 9 win seasons with Cotton Bowl wins and we will see who is trying to get out of where. If that happens, I will come on this board and post that Goat Holder is the best poster in the history of the internet.

Last time I checked, Nutt is still working in Oxford. You think you could say the same thing about Mullen with the same set of facts?

Open your eyes, man.

that Nutt's recruiting classes are better than Orgeron's were. I'm expecting a BCS bowl for the Rebels within a couple of years. Apparently, Orgeron's ****** recruiting has been holding them back the last couple of years.

I'd say the reason Nutt has stayed in Oxford is lack of options, personally. If Auburn or Clemson or whoever had really wanted him, he'd be there. He and Sexton played you guys, pal. Perhaps you should heed your own advice and open your own eyes.</p>

imo...

You'll be wishing you had that ****** O-line from last year back, not to mention that ****** QB that Orgeron recruited.

Nutt's O-line recruits are by and large 1st and 2nd year players. If I recall, you had a young O-line in the 2008 Egg Bowl, correct? That young OL that gave up some school record for sacks or something like that. Now, that same O-line two years later is being touted as a strength of your team.

You can't rely on youth up front in the SEC. That's our problem. Most of Nutt's O-line recruits won't be SEC ready for another year or two with a couple exceptions. When they are, I expect it to be a really good group.

You're right on QB as well. Orgeron's QB recruiting consisted of Snead, Tapp, Herrick, oh and that Juco Schaeffer guy. Snead had potential, though he was a head case.

Orgeron's recruiting was good, but it was definitely overhyped. Nutt's recruiting so far, looks pretty good to me as well, and I don't think it's a stretch to suggest it might be better. I know Goat isn't impressed because he's convinced players from other states can't be good, but we'll start to see some of the early returns of what Nutt has been doing this fall. A lot of that 2009 class will be getting its first real action, and we'll see a little bit of the 2010 group. If they develop as a group like I think they can, then yes I think they can be as good as the 2008 group we had, except with better depth. We'll have to see if they develop that way, but I'm more confident in the recruiting we've been doing the past few years than I've ever been.
