on Wes Rea as a baseball prospect? I know he's a **** OL with over 15 offers, but is he on that level as a baseball player?

He will be a dandy dozen next year and is a P/1B that throws in the low 90's. He would be a very nice pickup.

that Cohen can recruit offensive lineman better than Croom could.

But to reiterate what you have said- Wes supposedly likes playing baseball better, and he is a pretty good player at both. I think he will be a pitcher for us, but he has some pretty good power, to. He hit 8 home runs last year.

Todd,
Wanted to get your thoughts on this. Supposing that Rea goes ahead and commits, that will make at least 4 South Mississippi commits/signess by my count (2 Sumrall, 1 Oak Grove, 1 Harrison Central) from the area in 09-10. Considering our lack of recruiting success in this area as of late and Southern's success lately, I find this pleasantly surprising. Do you think this is an influx of talent, better recruiting (I'm pretty sure of this) or both?

I think it's MSU doing a better job of recruiting the state of Mississippi, and Burroughs, who recruited many of the players for USM's CWS team this past year, is the main guy recruiting Mississippi.

The Pine Belt and the coast have had good baseball players for years, but I think a lot of people focus more on the Jackson and North Mississippi guys because they seem to get better press for whatever reason.

And I'll go ahead and correct myself- BDJ says that Rea has 6 home runs. My source probably exagerrated the home run total a little bit.

Also, look for State to get Jackson Posey from Sumrall to. We need him- he actually has better offensive stats than Chase Luwallen, who Gene has fallen in love with. Posey hit .505 with 10 home runs last year. He's also a RH power hitter, which is something that we are going to really need now that we have middle infielders and a CF. We have some potential LH power guys in Bright, Byrd, and Bole. But as of now, we have no RH power hitters. Posey will help with that a little bit, and could be a 3B, which would fill another need.
