Does Mark Stoops have the requisite abilities to be UK's head coach?

Alot of young or first time head coaches usually recruit an elite QB that will be good enough to mask the coaches flaws while he is in the process of getting things in his program rolling. Look at how Teddy made Strong look while he was here at UL. You can also look at how Manziel made Sumlin look when he first got to aTm. Look at both of them now that they don't have those top flight qb's, they look no better than Stoops imo. Petrino isn't a new or young coach but he definitely hasn't coached well this season and he hasn't really put together a good Oline but with Lamar jackson so many of our deficiencies get overlooked because of his play at QB and the many threats he pose. Stoops just doesn't have the luxury of having that type of guy running his offense but once he does I believe he will roll.
Petrino>>>>stoops. All day everyday of the week, month, and year. I can't believe we let petrino slip away and instead brought in stoops. I would take leach, petrino and brohm over stoops everyday. And the horrible part is we had a chance at 2 of those 3 coaches, but we picked stoops. Look who came out the winners? WSU and Louisville. We came out the losers. Effing sucks being a UK football fan sometimes (all the time) we never catch a break and when our AD finally had the chance to catch a break. He passes on it. He passes on the 2 coaches I'm almost positive would've turned things around regardless of baggage. I'll take the baggage if it means winning, idgaf how much character our coach has if he can't coach! Baggage+wins>good character+losing. And as far as Sumlin and Strong. They are simply on a whole different level when it comes to in game coaching regardless of their recent struggles. No comparison. Sumlin and strong would coach circles around stoops much like every coach we go up against, especially in the SEC. The coaches in this league make stoops look like a grade school coach.

The comparison of stoops to Sumlin and strong are simply night and day. They have proven themselves. Stoops, well. After 3 years of on the job training with almost no experience on the staff hes been making as many or more (IMO way more) coaching errors than he did his first year here. People keep saying he just needs to learn from his mistakes. But it seems as if he ain't really learning. It looks to me like the more he coaches the more mistakes he makes game to game. Yet people wanna keep saying he just needs to learn from his mistakes and we'll be fine. But from what I've seen (every game as I am a season ticket holder) he hasn't learned a damn thing from any of his mistakes after 3 years. He just keeps finding new innovative ways to make more mistakes than ever before. If you think Sumlin and strong have recently looked no better than stoops as far as coaching. Well.. Then you haven't watched enough UK football this year because those of us who are realistic and watch every game. Realize that there isn't a coach in the nation that makes more mind boggling in game decisions and mistakes than stoops.

It's something like I've never seen before as far as ineptness goes. The decisions stoops makes on a game to game basis is laughable and quite pathetic. The excuses the man comes up with after every game is also equally pathetic (his apologists surprisingly somehow come up with more excuses than even he does, gotta be some sort of world record for excuses) saying things such as "if that questionable at best, atrocious play call worked then everyone would be calling us geniuses and gutsy". There's a reason the play call was atrocious regardless of if it worked or not dumbass. He's simply just way in over his head. The man can't coach, he doesn't make adjustments. His abilities and qualities start and end with recruiting. Outside of recruiting he's as bad of a head coach the game has ever seen at this level (I swear I'm not exaggerating either I know I sound like a disgruntled fan but it's the gods honest truth, he's the worst in game coach I've ever seen, there's not even a close 2nd, the realistic non homer fans who actually believe what their eyes are seeing will for the most part all agree, the homers on the other hand will call you a troll UL fan for being honest about stoops). You just haven't watched enough UK football games and post game excuse conferences to truly know how inept of an in game head coach he truly is. It's bad man, his coaching abilities are pathetic at best.

Someone literally called me retarded the other day and a bunch of other fans (stoops apologists) backed him up on it saying I was retarded for thinking stoops was in any way shape or form involved with the offense and telling me it was the dumbest thing they've ever read on this board and they were saying he wasn't involved in the offense in any way and I just couldn't believe my eyes. I seriously just couldn't believe how dumb some of our 'fans' are to go as far as calling me a retard for something I know I was right and know they were wrong about. And I get called a troll all the time for not thinking stoops is the best coach UK could've gotten and for not being all in with him. Apparently just because I think our coach is trash it means I'm not a UK fan to some. So I guess if you're not naive then you're not a UK fan.

He's simply an atrocious head coach that can recruit. And yes I agree this is by far the worst in game coaching I've ever seen in my entire life week to week when it comes to adjusting and in game decisions. The vandy game where we ran the ball 3 straight plays out of the shotgun from the one yard line was as bad of a decision I've ever seen and it alone is the sole reason we didn't go bowling. It was just as bad as the Seahawks not handing lynch the ball maybe even a worse decision just with way lower stakes. Not comparing the 2 because the stakes were way different but as far as horrible decision making the 2 situations do compare. Difference is carol is a legend and stoops is a coach who consistently makes woeful decisions like that (he may have not called those plays but if he didn't like the play call he can and will veto it, but he didn't he just let it happen).
I think hiring Gran and Hinshaw will make a major difference with this coaching staff. My major problem with the season was the offense. Defense was left in bad situations way to many times this season. We didn't have the talent to overcome that.

I agree with you 100% about Stoops ability (or I guess I should say lack of ability) to coach. I've stated my opinion numerous times that I think he's beyond terrible. With that said I can't agree with your willingness to consider Petrino as our coach. You're entitled to your opinion but he is the lowest life form on this planet and a total scum bag. I'd stop following UK football if he was our coach.

I don't disagree with all of the points you make. Stoops has made mistakes while he has been here. A point that should be made is how bad of shape the program was in when Stoops took over. I think he should be given atleast 4 years just because of that. It's hard to coach in the SEC and factoring in the talent that was here when he started it just makes it even more difficult. Petrino and strong both inherited a whole lot more talent then stoops did. Petrino had Brian Brohm and Michael Bush when he first started at Louisville. I personally think the Shannon Dawson hire really set this program back. His stubbornness hurt the offense. Refusing to let Pat run with the ball, not utilizing Conrad in the offense, and the stupid play calls set the offense up to fail. He wanted to run his style of football instead of running plays that utilized the talent that we had. You can't do that and expect to be successful here. It's Stoops fault in hiring him but he resolved that issue and made two great hires to improve the offense. Only time will tell if it will work out. You may end up being right with your assessment, but I hope that this staff proves all of the doubters wrong.

I watched Texas this year and they looked horrible. Players were tweeting from the sidelines, missed tackles, poor calls, bad to's. .. bad teams make every mistake look worse and good teams hide bad decisions give stoops another couple years because he's gonna be here for 2 more years regardless.
