Does More Success at Boise Equal Less Success Elsewhere?

Chris Petersen would be an exciting addition to the SEC West. But when taking a look at the track record of his three predecessors that were hired away to bigger programs, maybe a successful Boise State coach isn't such a great idea after all.

Boise State's last three coaches were hired by more prominent programs. And it appears, the better the coach did on the blue turf, the he did in his next job. Take a look at Houston Nutt, Dirk Koetter, and Dan Hawkins.

Houston Nutt (97): 5-6 Boise State; 75-48 (42-38 SEC) at Arkansas; 8-4 (5-3 SEC) at Ole Miss
Dirk Koetter (98-00): 26-10 Boise State; 40-34 (21-28 PAC-10) at Arizona State
Dan Hawkins (01-05): 53-11 Boise State; 13-24 (8-16 BIG 12) at Colorado
Chris Petersen (06-Present): 35-3 Boise State; ?? at Mississippi State

All capable coaches, none program saviors. All arguably left or will soon leave the job after Boise with a program in a better condition than when they arrived, but with a disenchanted fan base.

I'm just having a tough time seeing how Petersen could be that much better of a program-builder than any of three guys before him.

Dirk Koetter is a good coach and should have another opportunity to be a college head coach.

Dan Hawkins is a hell of a coach. He was on my short list 2 years ago after the Tulane loss. He's done a good job so far at Colorado. Next season will be the litmus for him, but I've got a feeling he'll be just fine. Petersen is going to be big too, just wait.

I believe Petersen was the offensive coordinator at Boise when Hawkins was the coach. Could Petersen have been the reason behind Hawkins' success, much the way Cutcliffe was the reason for much of Fulmer's success?

Well, the thing about Peterson is this: He is the only one of those to go undefeated at Boise. He also has had success against BCS teams like Oklahoma and Oregon- both of which were/are good teams. And I've seen them from time to time on ESPN, and one thing about them- they're always prepared, they're always solid, they always play hard, and they're always disciplined.

I like his offense- it's balanced, it's a pro-style type of offense, and I think that if we got him, it would be an awesome hire.

hardly. actually, ive read many an article about how a lot of their players were either overlooked by big programs, or werent heavily recruited due to sketch character/grades.

they have gotten a lot of players from the parts of LA that are less than glamorous.
