Does MSU typically make coaches contract public?

The State contract is public and the media guys usually get a copy of if via FOI request. The Foundation contract, from which the bulk of the money is paid, is private and isn't made public.

and not unique, then it probably makes sense to advertise those elements. And by "proud of" I mean elements that only the top echelon of football programs could touch. It reinforces a public commitment of both parties. If there are other intangible type things that are in it that make Mullen happy, I'd keep those on the DL.

I am not a Mississippi attorney, and I don't know much about the Mississippi FOIA laws, but I am surprised they can legitimately keep any part of Mullen's contract private. I mean, Mullen himself is a state employee, so I would have thought that any contract he signs in his professional capacity would be subject to a FOIA request, whether that contract was with a State agency or a private agency.

But I will also admit I am biased. I don't think any coach's contract should be private. If we are expected to buy tickets and voluntarily give money to the Bulldog Club, then we should be allowed to know all the financial details involved.

Perhaps no one is willing to go through the expense of challenging MSU's position on the FOIA laws just to learn the details of Mullen's contract.

is public b/c he's an employee of a subdivision of the state. A FOI request for it is a layup. But the Bulldog Club is not related to the state at all - it's a private club that isn't funded or controlled by the state, and just like any other private business they can enter into contracts with whoever they want and tell you it's none of your damn bidness.

They do have to make their contracts public (that's how we know how much every football coach makes, except for private schools). And they do fall under the control of the state. Back in the 90s Mississippi's Foundation signed a 10-year contract with Tommy Tuberville, only to have the state nullify it because it was for more than the 4-year maximum for state contracts. The next year, Tuberville left for Auburn.

I've never seen anyone from state's contracts. And coacheshotseat.com (or whatever the site is) used a tax schedule where the Foundation had to list its top 5 independent contractors paid over 900k or something.

If this is true, it seems like we would have seen them.

I don't care if he signs a contract with a private agency, if it relates to his job as a state employee, then it should be public information.

If I write a letter to MSU, that is a public document. If I write a letter to the Head Coach of the MSU football team, that should also be a public document. If I write a letter to Dan Mullen as a private citizen, that is a different matter: he can make it public if he wants to, but you cannot force him.

But, as I said, I don't know the details of the Mississippi FOIA laws.

that the only contract that had to be public knowledge was the one between Dan and the university since it's a public record, and that his K w/ the Bulldog Club/foundation was private. But who knows . . . .
