I think Stoops tanked those games because he wanted out of here with his massive buyout. Mitch is arrogant and always wants to prove he’s the smartest guy in the room so Pope will get at least one more year unless he leaves on his own.
If stoops wanted out then he would have never won those games against UF and Auburn.

As someone who isn’t sure, so I’m not trying to be an *** here but honestly curious about discussion — what does the season have to look like for Pope to NOT get another season?

If we miss the tournament?
If we lose every single game?
What’s the cutoff that says enough is enough?
I personally think missing the tournament should be an automatic firing here unless you had just won the title like Cal in 2013. Sadly I think we could probably lose out and Barney still wouldn’t fire him this year. Mitch is a gutless coward. Even if he did fire him he would just make another horrible hire. If you believe Jones, Mitch was done to Pope and Shaka Smart.

There’s absolutely not a worse AD in the country.

I'll wait till season is over then decide. We had several teams that looked like this early under Cal that made pretty good runs late. Ominously ( to me at least) this team plays like many of Cals late teams.

I’m glad you agree that specific context matters. Remember that next time you compare Utah Valley State efficiency numbers to a major conference or disregard injury effects on games.

2021 was on Calipari — just like every other year with increasing lack of hope. Calipari and Pope can both be falling short and we can acknowledge where both did good and did bad. End of Cal sucked. Last year, Pope did better than expected given context. This year, he’s eroded all the equity he built and now we have little hope. All of that is true.
That wasn’t me.

He didn’t exceed any expectations in my book. Merely met them. In today’s era, that was nothing special. But it wasn’t to be sneezed at either. Long way of saying he simply did his job and didn’t earn equity.

Because he had one one year that exceeded expectations and now one below expectations. Third year tells the tale.
He's never actually proven himself as championship pedigree as a coach and recruiting is taking BTA.

Yes, last season had good wins but the only consistent thing is embarrassing double digit losses.
If u can't buy a team with 22 mil, then another yr won't change anything. Recruiting is the life blood of the program and nobody wants to play for Magnus Carlsen.

I think the list is smaller due to you can now win a title just about anywhere thanks to NIL. But it's not like it's a bad list.

I think Pearl would love to do it.
I think coaches like Otz at Iowa St might like a shot at a running a big time program.
I think there's a world you can convince a guy like Golden (if he continues to do well) to come here.

The problem lies in we want "program guys" and well, they just don't exist anymore or aren't very good.

Pelphrey sucks
Pope is struggling
Woods was awful

Donovan and Tubby were really the two only successful Pitino guys.
Vogel and Leonard Hamilton 😆

After pope, it was either Shaka Smart or Chris Jans. Those were Mitch’s choices. The man is a dimwit and he’s let us all down

I think if Mitch does not retire, he gets at least one more year.

If we hire one of Mitch's cronies as AD, he has a 50% chance to stay for next year.

If we get a new AD outside of Mitch's grasp, Pope won't be here next year.

Remember Mitch didn't Fire Cal after his 9-16 year and he hated Cal. Imagine what he would allow Pope to do.

The only way I think Mitch fires Pope is if he does not win 1 SEC game.

The only way Pope is gone next year is if Mitch retires, get a new AD outside of Mitch's influence or if he decides to step down.

I voted no because of bad coaching consistencies. All of the coaching errors from Cal, I thought would be remedied but its nearly the same but with worse players. Not to mention probably going to lose on Stokes and Collins. (not chandler)
He will 100% be here next year, regardless of who the AD is

Another year just for the fanbase, boosters, Pope and his family to be utterly miserable.

According to some of you, Pope must insane if he’s refusing to consider his sanity in all this. Sometimes the money ain’t worth it. This is one of those occasions.

Pay attention. It shouldn’t count for anyone. Use all caps next time too, doesn’t change anything. Cal did a crap job. Still doesn’t change the fact that was just a stupid season. Guys being forced to sit. Games canceled. Just dumb. Say Cal did a trash job, he did. But don’t spew this “only coach to win less than 10 games” or “sub .500” crap. It’s disingenuous.
Yeah, you still don't throw it out. Pay attention.

It really doesn't matter what some fans want. Short of him going off the rails like Billy G, he will be the coach next year. Pope is not going to just quit.

Deserves another year or will get another year?

This is the nuance. He doesn't deserve it, but he'll get it. They can't afford to fire him while also paying Mitch's previous stupid buy out.

Its still early so let's hope he turns it around this season, but the issues really aren't fixable enough to overcome our overall deficiency.

The only reason he might not get another year is I really think Mitch is out. The way the Stein hire went down made that obvious. So it likely isn't up to Mitch. Also if Mitch is out of his role, the buyout reduces imo.

Lets see how this season ends but as it is today he doesn't deserve another year.

Let it stain Cals legacy or whatever, but it’s not comparable to other yrs. Look at it this way…if Pope goes 6-12 in the SEC (real possibility). It will be as bad as Eddies last yr (we all know what was going on there), Ricks first (death penalty yr) and Cal/Covid. And Pope will have done it in his second yr with a super expensive roster and zero of those other situations. The level people are willing to be apologetic to this soft a$$ loser is just baffling to me.

This tells everything. Absolutely pathetic. Billy G was ran out of town after year 2. When he has the same record at UK through 50 games as Pope does. This team might not win a game on the road

If he comes back people should not go to a single game. He can’t recruit. He can’t coach. His teams consistently look flat and unprepared

Give it time folks! It’s time to be disgusted with the effort, the dribbling the ball to death, the selfish play, the lack of caring about each other. It’s the coaches job to fix it. There is time to fix all those problems, let’s see if He is tough enough to make those hard decisions. I think He is. I may be wrong. I was wrong one time, but it’s been a while!

I’m not telling you to be anything, but I am saying some of these comments are sad and disgusting.
It’s just part of it. Not saying it’s right, but fans are going to be pissed. I’d say Coach Pope is mad as well.

Pope should resign at the end of the season. Pull a Calipari. This isn't going to work. Next year will have Trent Noah playing heavy minutes. With a portal team. Total bust of a hire. UK needs a real coach.

Speaking of toxicity, are you familiar with toxic positivity? Some of you along with Pope are pushing the toxic positivity really, really hard right now.
Unicorn farts as I call it.
Look I’m all for the power of positivity. Because if you don’t have it you’ll give up on things before you even try.

But when it isn’t working, it isn’t working. And continuing to do the same thing and expecting different results is a definition of insanity.
