I didn't think playing an fcs school counted toward a redshirt. But had a discussion with a friend of mine and he was positive we took the redshirt a off of the likes of D. Williams and Shumpert. Can somebody clarify this?

Once you play your rs is gone. Doesn't matter who the opponent. Only chance they have of redshirting this season is if they're injured.

I-AA games count, so there is no redshirt for any of the players who played. Only exception would be if one of them had an injury and took a medical redshirt. Schools sometimes tend to be pretty liberal as to what they consider a qualifying injury if they want to redshirt a player who has already played a snap.

I questioned the decision..........

but now that he has played, he needs to play.

Playing all the freshmen seemed a little forced to me. It was almost as if Mullen was making a recruiting pitch. That we'll play freshmen too.

it isn't up to the school. once he plays he's played EXCEPT if he is injured VERY early....i'm not sure the rule exactly but he can't play in more than one or two quarters for that exemption to apply...so if shumpert played in the 2 and 4th quarters and was injured in the 4th maybe he'd get a reprieve but after that, no go and its strictly by the numbers. the 6th yr medical redshirt is only used in relatively rare instances like DT Shackleford's multi year issues and can't be applied for untill all other eligibility has run out...........i think

You're right about one thing. You don't know what the rule is. Actually, you are right about the 6th year double medical redshirt rule. That one is rarely used (or needed) and has to be approved by the NCAA after the 5th year. But for just a regular 1st time medical redshirt, the player can play in up to 30% of the team's games but none in the 2nd half of the season and get a medical redshirt. And those are pretty automatic and sometimes more than a little questionable.

Makes me wonder about Perkin's health

That was the only thing that made sense to me when I saw Shumpert enter the game.

I think it may have as much to do with the coaches' lack of faith in Robinson and Milton's ability to get the job done next year, and the coaches lack of faith in Griffin's knees, going forward.

Shump may be the guy next year.

Playing your best players regardless what class they are in is the thing to do, especially skill position players. You never know when an injury will occur. Shumpert is at least our second best RB. What are we saving players for, next year? We need to win this year and if one of the true freshmen can help us in a few plays each game so bit it. The two RB's we have committed are "suppose to be better than what we have now. Times have changed, recruiting freshmen to play early is more positive than negative.

I just don't see what the big deal in playing freshmen, when you sign players you hope they can start 2 or 3 years anyway.

I know some disagree but IF I'm coaching I play whoever helps us win.

you are exactly right. Why not play him ?

Mississippi produces 2-3 FBS RB's every year. Why not go ahead and play him? We have Aeries Williams and Dontavian Lee already signed, and both are supposed to be really good. The time is now to win. We are fine right now at RB and QB. Same thing with Williams . Go ahead and play him . We have Elijah Staley coming in who can RS next year if need be .

I'm fine with playing him if we play him. He was sure absent from the OSU game. If we don't see him any more than the OOC games that are firmly in control, I will be pissed. But if he shows up next weekend and other games I'm ok with it. And Mullen should be fired on the spot if the words "secret weapon" are uttered.
