...now they're saying the well was gushing well over 40K barrels/day before the cap. That's 2M gallons. An Exxon Valdez every 5 days.

Read about the Lakeview Gusher in 1910. It was spewing 18K barrels a day at first but grew to 90K at its peak and went on for 18 months. Did BP spend billilons to tap a reserve that would produce less than that? I doubt it...

If they told us the amount spilled was 6 gallons per day or 6M.. would it matter? I say no... and that was the plan all along. Release a less alarming figure to begin with and slowly eek it higher as the months went on. By now it's merely semantics.
