is no longer a cursed city? Has anybody asked Pat Robertson about this yet? I'm planning a trip and I was wondering if it is safe now.

True story...

He took his wife and two kids.

When he stopped at the MS / LA border and entered the LA welcome center, he asked a worker there for some advice - regarding things to see.

The worker pulls out a map of New Orleans and places large X'es on 3/4 of the city with a Sharpy. The worker explains that the X'es represent the areas that are not safe for a family to walk...

Cursed or not, I would recommend that you do some research before the wander the streets of New Orleans...

New Orleans has always been safe, you just have to know where to go. There are some bad parts, like most big cities. Uptown and by the lake are pretty safe areas. The French Quarter is what it is, keep your wallet in you front pocket and just stay on the main streets and you will be fine. Jackson Square, The Riverwalk, Aquarium and the Zoo are great for Kids. The D-Day museum and the Museum of Art are also big attractions.

Weget to New Orleans and pull upto a gas station (one of the ones that shuts everything down except for the rotating window at 6pm) to pick up some drinks before venturing out. As we stand there talking, we heard a "popping" sound. It didn't take long to figure out what it was when the windows of the service station exploded behind us. I look around and everyone else in the parking lot was on the ground except us. One of the natives offered up some friendly advice "You better get your white asses on the ground!" The cops showed up surprisingly quick and beat the **** our of the guy.

/Fun times.

but the bottom line is that New Orleans is one of, if not the most dangerous cities in America. It's homicide rate speaks for itself. That being said, I love New Orleans.

11th in the country, per the FBI. It's like Memphis, which is the most violent city in the country some years, yet the downtown zip code is one of the safest around. Stay out of the bad parts. Like any city.

than a good "my cousin's bosses sister's co-worker" went to _______ (New Orleans/Memphis/Atlanta/Houston) and _________ (patently absurd urban legend) happened to them. NO, REALLY! I'm never going back there unless/until _______." story. I was nearly convinced that when we went to Mardi Gras, we'd get knifed and a brick would be thrown through our window the second we stepped out of the car. Like anywhere, just use some common sense, and don't think you're a badass, and you're good to go.

who got robbed, but about every single friend who lived in MS had 37 friends who had all been robbed at gunpoint every single time they stepped foot in the city. There were a lot of car breakins, etc. but the violent crimes usually stay confined to certain areas. And about 95% of Memphis' homicides were ones where the victim knew the perpertrator, and not random violence.

Visitors don't know where the bad parts are, how large the bad parts are, or what roads should be taken to steer clear of them.

I've accidentally been through some pretty nasty areas in various cities due to blindly listening to the GPS.

If you're visiting any city, you're more than likely going to the tourist areas. And those are never the bad parts of that city. All this hype about the murder rate in NO is way overblown. The rate is like 65 per 100,000 residents. And I'd be willing to be that at least 2/3 of those are drug deals gone bad, gang vs. gang related, or domestic matters. The chances of a random tourist being murdered there are less than that tourist's chances of dying in a car wreck on the way to NO.
