We have two kids..5 year old and 9 year old. Looking at getting a dog for the family. Need one that does not shed. Entire family has allergies so also one that is good for allergies. We live in Lexington. Guessing most don’t recommend getting from a pet store? Rescue groups? Which rescue groups? Thanks in advance!

Get a cat. They’re much better pets.

I have a F1B Goldendoodle - meaning a smaller golden doodle basically (ours is only 25lbs). Doesn’t shed, smart, as friendly and gentle as can be. Great breed, will be all I ever get, amazing with the kids. We ordered ours online from a breeder in North Dakota and he was flown in and we picked him up at the airport.

German Shepherd...protective, loyal, smart and great with kids. Plenty of rescues available. They shed like a machine but they’re worth it. Mine is three years old and she’s the best dog I’ve ever been around despite her quirks

I also have an Anatolian Shepherd...150 lbs and a natural guard dog. You can leave your wife and kids alone with one of those without worry. They bond with their family like no other. I’m a big dog guy...they’re my troops

If you’re gonna get a dog, go all in and get a dawg.

I would go with either a Labradoodle (Labrador-Standard Poodle mix) or Goldendoodle (Golden Retriever Standard Poodle mix). All three of these breeds are in the top ten of intelligence, are good with kids and the poodle in them keeps the shedding to a minimum.

However, if you are a navy seal or just want a bad *** dog, then there is only one answer:

BELGIAN MALINOIS (awesome video)

We have a Lab and he is a gentle giant. We got him from a shelter. Very good around children, They can lay on him like a pillow and he does not move.

If you want an outside dog I would go with a Golden Retriever. If you want an inside dog a Goldendoodle or Schnauzer. We have a Mini Schnauzer and she doesn't bother my wife's allergies. I know a guy who raises Golden Doodles if you are interested send me a PM and I will give you his contact info. He is cheaper than anyone else you will find for a Goldendoodle.

Had poodles for 20 plus years. Smart, loyal and no allergy issues. Avoid the toys when you have small children but miniatures are great.

Long lives and usually very little medical issues.

That’s a mountain lion. Can be found in eastern KY.

Just a little bit of advice...
Big dog = big turds to pick up in your house & yard...and clean off your shoes.
Little dog = little turds to pick up in your house & yard.

Little dogs aren't "Paddock" manly, but they're a crap load easier to take care of...especially since you have a 5 & 9 year old.

Bad allergies mean you're probably going to want to lean toward a ______oodle of some sort.

This is likely true. Poodles are some of the lower allergy dogs.......but nothing is 100% hypo.

Remember that when it comes to breeds.......most were developed for a purpose.

-The hound group were bred to track animals. Advanced training wasn't a major focus when developing this group. So, this group tends to bark, wander, etc.

-Herding group - often bred for advanced training.....so, they follow commands very well. That's why Border Collies and Shepherds (Aussies, German, etc) are so common in families. They are often very, very high energy and will herd your kids though.

-Working group - some are bred to pull carts.....some are bred to protect. Be very careful.

-Sporting group - Bred for hunting. They follow commands very well, but are very high energy. Poodles, Pointers, Retrievers, etc.

-Terriers - bred to hunt varmints.......dig, go through tunnels. Some learn commands well, some don't.

-Toy group - mainly just companionship. Most were bred for little else.

There's a reason why the herding and sporting groups often dominate the family favorites. Labs, Goldies, German Shepherds, Poodles, Collies, etc.

We got a 3 mo. old Golden last week to accompany the current Heinz 57 mutt. Had 2 Goldens in the past and they are wonderful.

Lost our JRT and beagle last year to cancer so it was time to add back to the family.

And all dogs shed to an extent...just deal with it. If it isn't their hair, it's their dander. If this is an issue, then get a goldfish.

@Creed Bratton I would like the contact info. I’m not sure how to send you a PM. Thanks!
