Andy Murray had been blowing through the field, but he ran into a buzzsaw today, 6-2, 7-5, 6-3. It was over in less than 2 hours. Some "down" year for Federer. Semis at the Aussie Open while he was still fighting mononeucleosis, finals at both the French and Wimbledon (where he lost possibly the greatest match ever played) and US Open champion. Not to mention an Olympic gold medal in doubles. He's one major away from tying Sampras's record 14.

He really hasn't been playing well -- for him -- lately. There are 300 other professional tennis players who would give their right nut to play as 'badly' as he is now.

i hate i missed watching him demolish murray like that. it has been a down year for roger, yes. but, i think he still has a few more years of top-notch tennis. like you said, pat, in his worst year, he has still had a great year. i think he takes sampras's record next year. and if they'd actually play on grass instead of dirt at wimbledon, he would already be tied.</p>
