WVU securing their 4 star QB for 22, one that is widely known to be extremely well liked among other recruits, no doubt serving an instrumental piece to the 22 class, but also how he'll leverage his peer likeability to bring additional talent to Morgantown.
Getting a quality QB commit early, no matter if they are well liked or not, usually helps attract more talent, esp skillset positions, to every class. However, one as well liked & influential as Nicco, curious how far he & WVU staff will be able to take this TakeMeHome22..
Like a domino effect, this may result in multiple 4 star WR's, a 4 star RB, and possibly a 4 star LB & DB... Some of these visited the same time as Nicco, and are already heavily targeted by the staff. Talent attracts talent, and if you are a RB, WR, OL, or DB, you want to go where your class has a quality QB, for various reasons.. Momentum a known form of physics & behavior, may finely be applicable to recruiting in Morgantown. Something thats very difficult to accomplish, and we absolutely must give the WVU staff credit for creating the environment to attract these types of players. Many of whom are traveling thousands of miles from home to play for WVU and the staff here..
While improving recruiting is just the first step in building for long term success, Brown & staff has continued to build each class better then the last. While the 22 class is far from being known, it would seem likely that trend will continue.
From the time Brown was hired, Ive said many times in thi forum, improving recruiting is a slow process, a two steps forward 1 step back type of pattern, when you analyze other programs that have "climbed" historically. However, Brown & Staff are accomplishing this without the 1 step back...
Ive also said many times here, when you analyze all the Blue Blood P5 programs, many of which are far better positioned for talent acquisition, a realistic goal for WVU would be to achieve & maintain a 3 year average in the 22-26 range. Meaning if you averaged the past 3 years of class rankings they would be in the 22-26 range. I never imagined Brown would+could recruit this well, so fast. While we are still a few years away from being able to maintain a 3 year average in that range, you can see how it goes from a "Hope" to a very real possibility. That my friends, is cause for excitement. Maintaining a 3 year average of 22-26 range would absolutely give us the base talent needed, when combined with quality coaching, development, culture, & schemes to bring us back to National conversation. Taking us from a competing 1 in 8 years type of program, to a 1 in 3 years type, with a "down" year still producing 8-10 wins, and a "UP" year securing 10+ wins.. Playing 11 P5 opponents will continue to be a major test for us, year in and year out, once the NCAA changes to a 12 team CFP, this could be a major factor in WVU making the dance, even if its a lower seed in the beginning.
If I had one suggestion to the NCAA board would be to enact a new policy that teams must play at least 10 P5 opponents in order to be eligible for the CFP. This helps improve the accuracy of the rankings, due to increased cross conference games, more interesting, more fair, & more profitable. Its truly a win/win/win.. Not something the SEC would like, but the days of top SEC programs practically getting a Bye week in late Nov is not fair to programs who at least have to suit up every week. Our out of conference games, if won, will def help propel us into a top 12 ranking, securing a spot in the CFP. The growth that could occur from that could help the staff continue to climb and possibly exceed previously highlighted talent "ceilings"..
Even if Brown continues to improve talent, it still requires time. These players, while being more talented, still need time to mature, grow, develop, & gain live rep experience, but...... it most certainly is justification for optimism. We still require patience, but the path leading us to competing more consistently for a BIG12 title seems to at least be more clear.
From a talent acquisition perspective, hopefully we begin to see the fruits of this when we begin to play Penn State in 2023 & 2024. That should be enough time for the 2020-2022 classes to gain enough development & experience to impact outcome. Considering we compete with many recruits against PSU, if we win those games, it may continue to raise the floor, helping nurture a compounding effect...
Today was def a step in the right direction, one of many needed to pull us from the depths of obscurity & mediocracy, but def appreciative we have a quality Staff & HC changing our trajectory.
