I had to make two trips. The first was comprised of basic clothes, towels,school supplies and…my Marantz receiver, a couple of tower speakers and a Phillips record player.

I brought a car full my freshman year; over the year I realized I didn't need all of that stuff. When I got there for my sophomore year I had 1 duffel bag that's it.

Funny story from 20+ years ago. My boss' daughter was preparing for her freshman year at East Carolina and his wife insisted that she have a bigger and higher quality mattress that they purchased up north. My boss took a day or two off work to drive her to ECU so I asked him how it went when he returned. He said horrible. They had a mini van with roof rails where they tied down the mattress. He said the wind got hold of it while heading south on 95 and took off the mattress while ripping off the roof rails from his car. I asked what did you do? He said he got the mattress off the road and continued without it. When they got to ECU they went out and bought another mattress. Then he said now I have to go to the shop and have my car repaired.

My office looks out onto the parking lot next to North Halls. Move-in always provides for some entertaining viewing.

As for myself, my two years in Pinchot were pretty light. Our main decor theme was pizza box lids. No computer, no tv, etc. Back then, every pizza shop had their own customized box graphics and we covered our ceiling with all of the different pizza box lids with an enormous amount of poster putty.

Did any of you live in an unfurnished apartment while at school? My daughter went to grad school at Pitt and there are no dorms. She rented an apartment with 2 other girls which is bad enough because you have to rent for a year, not just the 9 month school year. Then you have to buy your own furniture. After a year she moved so we had to have her furniture picked up, temporarily stored, then picked up again and delivered to her new apartment. When she graduated we put most things out on the curb because getting it shipped back home cost more than it was worth.

had a similar experience when I was in grad/ med school in Pittsburgh. Parents lived in DC and we were there for Labor Day and were driving back to Pittsburgh. We were on 70 heading west and that weekend on that road it's all kids heading to colleges in points west. So there is a pick up ahead of us and we can see this mattress starts levitating up and down, rising a little above rim of the truck bed and then drops back down. Was pretty interesting to watch, I suppose was due to air pressure gradient coming over top of truck. And suddenly it rises up all the way out of the bed into the air, we are laughing it's pretty funny and suddenly it flips over and slams on to the road right in front of us. We hit it going 70+ mph and suddenly underside of car making weird wapiti wapiti sound. And I am like dam we blew a tire or strut. Pull off the road and what was making the sound was long strip of mattress cover torn off and stuck under car. Look back down the road and the mattress is getting pulverized pick up truck on side of road driver standing there like WTF.

Lived in one of Gus papas craptastic furnished apartments on north Craig street while in med and grad school in Pittsburgh. They were dumps to be polite but affordable. I could walk or take bus up center ave to med school or walk to Mellon institute to lab.

Had a baseball game last night and one of my teammates was gearing up for this weekends trip to take his daughter to UNC Greensboro. His daughter and her roomie met over the summer and decided to get matching bedroom sets. Its a bit crazy to me how involved these kids are with what their rooms look like

My oldest worked in the housing cleaning crew during his time at U Dayton. One summer, he was in charge of cleaning out the large dorm he lived in. He had his own room for the summer.

When they entered a room for the 1st time for clean out, he told his underlines what to do with the various items that were left by the residents. A lot went to the dumpster, but a percentage was placed in his room. At the end of each day, the crew assembled at his room and everybody took what they wanted. He moved to an off campus house where he had a nice business selling his remains of what was left.

Best part was they would make midnight runs to Miami U. and scavenge furniture that was being thrown out.

Proud of that kid.

I lived in an unfurnished townhouse in Southgate for my final two years at PSU (86-88). Can't remember where we got any of our furniture from...or what happened to it.

Moving my daughter in on Monday. The amount of stuff we bought is ridiculous. I bought a New York trade tower poster at mclanahans for my room my freshmen year for a couple of bucks. The car is packed. Making the drive from sc tomorrow.

One of our grandaughters, as a Freshman last year at Ole Miss, had her room decorated in similar styles. The rooms are not very large but with creative use of the space it worked. Not cheap.
