You have to foul there and extend the game. Otherwise, you leave yourself with so little time that, even if you get a stop, the other team can foul with under 5 seconds left before you can even get off a three. I think if there's a 10-second or more differential between shot and game clock, you play it out. But less than that, you have to foul.
