I realize the situations are not 100% comparable, but as someone who's looking to go into academia, I've always said that I'd want nothing more than to come back to MSU at some point, that it would be my "dream job". If I were in Byrne's shoes, at the first school to give me an opportunity while a school to which I had stronger ties came calling, I'd honestly have a tough time passing it up. We are a "stepping stone" kind of job because of our limited financial resources. In order for someone to stay here long-term, they'd have to have some additional motivation.
Is MSU's best hope for long-term success to go after people that view MSU as their "dream job" (e.g.. Joe Dean, Jr., Hudspeth?, etc.) or does that only breed complacency? On one hand, you could hire Cohen ... and on the other, you could hire LT.
