going forward in a 3-4 what do our DE recruits look like?

obviously I think Daniels and Watts project to NT but does Thomas project more as a DE ?

using the 4-3 as a reference are we looking at what were strongside defensive ends to man both DE positions in the 3-4?

seems like the DE in a 3-4 are more akin to slightly undersized DTs

thanks for the clarification

The Twins and D Thomas with their size and athleticism fit as 3-4 "DE" IMO
Davis twins are big for a 3-4 DE, but they are very athletic for their size. Deontre Thomas will need to add a little weight to play. Guy Thomas would project to an OLB in a 3-4.
The question is whether a guy like Carlos plays inside until we have a bigger 3-4 NT ready to go. Or perhaps the rumors of the UCONN DT are true.

The twins can slim down

Yes, the twins can play lighter if they are on the outside. But that's a decision that will have to be made in the next several months. Cause if Carlos gets dedicated to NT, he would need to add some lbs.

The overall size of our defense is going to get a lot bigger, a lot more pounds out on the field. Common sense says no eliminating a DT. DE will be larger as well as linebackers. Some of linebackers will look like DE/LB hybrids.

I guess.

The 3 down linemen will be similar in size to what we had in the DTs last year. 280-300 lb DE and a 300-325 NT. The Cat LB will eventually be smaller than the DEs from last year but faster. I think the ILB will eventually be 10-15 lbs heavier, the size to take on a guard but the speed to drop into coverage and play the underneath zone. The Dog LB has to be able to play pass coverage against the slot or the TE, be able to fill the D gap and have the ability to rush the passer if needed, I am thinking 220-235 range.

I am working on a spreadsheet this afternoon where I attempt to project where the current players will fit in the 3-4 base defense. We will have some shortcomings and some guys that are between positions. Those are the toughest to project. Hopefully I can get that done between appointments this afternoon.

I think the DEs will be in the 280-300 range. Assuming Diaco keeps the 2 gap principals he had at Notre Dame, the DEs will have to be able to play a 4 or 5 technique in base and play a 1,2 or 3 tech when they go to the 4 man front. They don't have the responsibility to set the edge like many 4-3 DEs do. Typically the have the B and C gap responsibility. So the need for speed is reduced but athleticism and instinct are important.

Look forward to seeing that spreadsheet, thanks for the effort.
