Maybe someone can link it. I can’t seem to get it to work. It’s all over Twitter.

Study found that N95 works best (obviously) but they the common blue surgical mask are also effective. I was shocked to see cloth mask work well too.

Apparently neck gaiters cause more problems than good.

On a related note, I saw where the governor said the rolling 7 day average is down 30% from its peak at July 30th.

If it's the same study I saw, the neck gaiters were worse than wearing nothing at all.

Yeah that’s right. I wouldn’t have expected much benefit from a gaiter but I wouldn’t have expected it to make matters worse.

The extremely vilified valved N95 was shown to be no worse at spreading droplets as a cloth mask. But I'm sure they'll keep getting attacked because we have such a good track record at actually reading and accepting evidence based science.

The big surprise is that the paper surgical masks are the best "cheap" option. If you could only find them in stores.

Worse for people around you, which is a big part of mask use. When you have the gator on and sneeze, cough, or speak, larger droplets are broken up into smaller spray by the porous material but all of it gets through pretty much unscathed and with about the same trajectory as without a mask - worse because more, smaller droplets about now, versus that one big loogie, and more likely to stay afloat a bit longer. The study is very cool, used a $200 laser and an iphone to track individual droplets caused by having someone talk through the various types of masks. Even offers directions for making your own tracker. Big takeaway for me is that masks are really for stopping spread to other people as much as providing you protection.

Here ya go..

”We noticed that speaking through some masks (particularly the neck fleece) seemed to disperse the largest droplets into a multitude of smaller droplets (see Supplementary Fig. S5), which explains the apparent increase in droplet count relative to no mask in that case.”

Im not sure “fleece” is accurate..I’m assuming they are talking about “buff” type garments, which are made for sun protection and to be as cool/breathable as possible.

Even the picture of the gaiter doesn't look like fleece. More like a stretchy polyester. I've seen fleece gaiters too, but they are definitely more of a winter running thing designed to keep your face and mouth warm.

Yeah, they are not using they type of gaiter I have, which is a fleece one for hunting. But I’d question anyone who put that on in August anyway.
