As much love as exists between K and Capel, K staunchly defended Duke recruiting in Pitt post game. Stephen Wiseman (Devils beat writer for Raleigh News and Observer), reported Coach K was adamant in defending Duke recruiting last nite:

I personally think it was time for Jeff to get his own gig again. Change is good....He looked very authoritative on the Panther bench last nite.....Pitt's improved, and Duke is dong fine, thank you....

While K was adamant, I would encourage folks to watch the presser to get it in the full context. I've seen a few tweets, both last night and this morning, saying K seemed somewhat upset by the question asked. I didn't get that at all.

I think he was doing two things....1) he didn't want the guys on his staff now to feel as though they were somehow being doubted, and 2) he left little doubt that when a kid commits, he commits to Duke and the head coach....like at any other program.

I think k was trying to maintain his own dignity and respect of his his own basketball program which is by the way Duke. All the K and Duke haters have been saying for the last several years that it was Caple who brings in all the talent. Now if you were Dukes basketball coach wouldn’t those acuuasations make you irate if they were untrue. I, like most I imagine thought it was Capel who was responsible for the big wins in recruiting. Us fans are after all looking in from the outside deciding what to believe .

Capel was great for Duke, but I think he was ready to run his own program. He got a lot of credit for our recruiting, and probably deserves a lot. Hope he does really well there, other than when he plays Duke.

Yeah he has probably quite a bit of pent up emotion from being out of the HC role. Thats only natural. Hes a hands on guy who's been HC at two different programs. Duke came at the perfect time for him, but change is good.

There is no doubt that Capel was an important piece. But that is what a good coach does, hire assistants who compliment each other. Capel is a hell of a recruiter; no one will dispute that. I am sure K saw how Capel operated and tweaked his style based on how responsive recruits were to him. I am also sure Capel changed his style in recruiting and coaching a bit from K.

A good head coach-assistant coach relationship is that they always compliment each other skills and can be mutually beneficial in terms of learning. I am sure Duke got a foot in the door on recruits from Capel that K got them to commit. But no one knows for sure if Duke would or would not have gotten some of those recruits had Capel not been there...

K doesn't have to put forth any special effort toward maintaining dignity and respect, and I doubt the GOAT gets irate over perceived slights.

I thought K was doing multiple things when answering the question about recruiting. The main idea seemed to be that he was indicating that Jeff is a heckuva a coach, who oversees everything, and that kids ultimately come to a school based on the head coach. He stated that Jeff has a vision and that's why those players ultimately went to Pitt, regardless of the other assistants and their involvement. He had Jeff's back just like he does with his players.

So far, Capel has done nothing to hurt his chances of being The Next One. His guys played hard last night and have had a decent season in a year that they were supposed to be terrible. Of course, Collins had one big year and hasn't come close to matching it so let's see how Capel does for the next 3 or so years (hopefully at least that many).

I think Capel will find it easier to maintain at Pitt. Nobody has ever won at Northwestern. Ever.

Bingo! Everyone knows recruiting took off when Capel came. That wasn’t a coincidence; but I get what K is doing in this scenario. Everyone knows Capel’s influence the past 7 years. EVERYONE!

Perhaps dignity was a bad word to use but K wants the full respect he has earned in his 40 plus years as a coach. Thats just human nature of a true leader I think he was protecting his ground a little because so much has been said about Caple being our Alpha recruiter and how recruiting was going to suffer when Caple left which it doesn't seem to have does it. Most on this board were probably worried that we would see a drop off in recruiting success like we have had the last 4 or 5 years. K was just making sure everyone realizes its all on him and he has the final say so. Coach K didn't get to where he is without an ego just as no successful leader does. I was glad to see K mark his spot because all basketball fans of other teams dont seem to have the same feeling about K as we do.;)
