Are the refs not supposed to announce that a player has swapped jersey numbers? Why teams should only be able to dress 1 player per number.

Heck you could use numbers like 01, 02 etc to get to 110 distinct numbers. Or use triple digit numbers for the bottom scrubs. This should not be allowed. Including walk ons, there are 100 players maybe 105. Game day dress outs are obviously less than that. You have 0 or 00 through 99. There are plenty of numbers
He's been wearing the number for a few weeks according to USCAre the refs not supposed to announce that a player has swapped jersey numbers?
I would suspect there are way less dressed out each game, so you wouldn’t even need to do that.Heck you could use numbers like 01, 02 etc to get to 110 distinct numbers. Or use triple digit numbers for the bottom scrubs.
It was changed way in advance of the gameThis is actually illegal. You can't have players with same number play the same position. It came up in the egg bowl years ago when Freeze put the crack head D tackle in on offense. In this instance, it is all but impossible for an official to tell the difference. Since it is so hard to catch in realtime, there should be some form of post game punishment for a coach in a situation like this.
That shouldn't matter. The opposing team shouldn't be responsible for determining if the regular punter 80 or regular QB 80 is taking the snap on 4th down. It's a clever attempt but that's a little too much.It was changed way in advance of the game
Changing numbers isn’t the issue. You can’t play different players at the same position wearing the same number. It is illegal. It was changed way in advance of the game

How does having one number per side change swapping numbers? Why teams should only be able to dress 1 player per number.

In this case your active roster can only have one .#80. If #80 is in the game everyone knows who it is.How does having one number per side change swapping numbers?
Triple digit numbers, nothing says "Mr Irrelevant" like being the first kid to ever have to wear a triple digit jersey number. Kind of like the kid that gets put in RF in Little League in the last inning of the game every week. Poor kid, he'd definitely get stuffed in a locker tooHeck you could use numbers like 01, 02 etc to get to 110 distinct numbers. Or use triple digit numbers for the bottom scrubs.
But it sounds like he’s changed numbers several weeks ago. If #1 lines up as punter next week, I’m pretty sure the opposing team will be able to tell you if it’s Kamario Taylor or Kelly Jones. If not, they are shítty scouts. In this case your active roster can only have one .#80. If #80 is in the game everyone knows who it is.
In the roster USC submitted before the game, the third string quarterback was listed as #80. Two punters can’t be listed with the same number but the quarterback is not the punter. It was negligence on the Northwestern coaches part not to notice that and say “hey, their third string quarterback is #80. That’s odd. We should watch out for a trick play.” And the NW coach admitted as much after the game. This is actually illegal. You can't have players with same number play the same position. Okay. That is kind of shady. Didn’t know the circumstancesIn the roster USC submitted before the game, the third string quarterback was listed as #80. Because then if you swapped jerseys with someone else you’d be wearing a different number. I’m fine with swapping jersey numbers with someone else every week if you want too. The point is there are enough numbers to not have two people wearing the same number. How does having one number per side change swapping numbers?
Then they've been working on the set up just waiting to use it.He's been wearing the number for a few weeks according to USC
They literally played the same position. And they weren’t playing the same position. One was listed as a QB and the other as a punter.
