East Coach didn’t know who Witherspoon was. The BND (criddle) pushes for that reaction. Witherspoon only played varsity in one game and got 4 carries.

As far as West goes, had Pettus leaving played a major role in Lovetts departure. Pettus had a great relationship with that kid and everyone knew it.

Stats on Maxpreps have Witherspoon as having played in 4 games as a freshman for Belleville East, 3 of which he played both ways. The stats could be wrong and certainly don't show a whole lot of activity, but enough that I would think that a coach would remember a freshman like that, especially when his most active game was in the lone playoff game. Quotes in the paper certainly implied that the coach knew who he was and was upset about it, but as you've already stated, that stuff can sometimes be taken out of context. On the other hand, public school coaches probably do take the transfer issue much harder than private school coaches. The Lutheran North coach doesn't seem to be saying much at all about Billinglsey transferring to ESL even though that one had to hurt.

Just think how good ESL would be if all the area kids that parents actually lived in ESL stayed and raised their families there. Most parents move to get their kids a better education with less distractions. It’s a hard knock life on those 89 blocks. Everyone is not built for it.

The Flyers are not unbeatable. But you have to play the game to find out. Comparing stats or just sitting in the stands saying who would beat who is just talk play the game to find out.
Def not unbeatable. They have the talent to be a very good team. Hopefully they can clean up a few things and play lights out for the post season. I’m surprised the defense is not better than it showed last night. Neuqua is good but I thought our secondary would have been able to adjust better.

"Built for it?" I just had a 15 year old cousin from E. St. Louis that was shot and killed there over the summer. If it would have been possible, I would have preferred that he was able to live elsewhere and likely be alive even if it would have meant being labelled as one who "is not built for it." Plus, people leaving the town that they grew up in and raising their family elsewhere is pretty normal. Most of the people that I grew up with left Edwardsville. Besides, ESL seems to be doing quite well with great athletes also moving into the community.

Neuqua has one of the best WR groups in the state. They are big, fast, and understand how to play the position. Larkin, Hoffman, and Stare will be a handful for anyone they play.

That being said, I, too, was surprised with the success they had last night. That ESL secondary is impressive.

Yes though the defense was improved over last year. Not to anything away from Nequa whom I thought was a good team . The Flyers know now they have to play better. On defense and special team kickoff coverage those are the weak areas. Oh and we have no kicker I can live with that but we have to take the 2 pt conversion more serious

Built for it was probably the wrong phrase there. If that’s the case, I’m not built for it either. I was born and raised in ESL. My moms still live in ESL but I moved and are not raising my kids there either. So I’m not “built for it” I guess what I was trying to say is I hate that the people that want to stay there, sometimes leave because of the narrative.

I hear you. The city has been through a lot and it's unfortunate for those that live there that the obstacles are so severe.

I’ll take this win considering the Flyers really didn’t practice most of the week because of the heat not using that as an excuse. But I will take it. On to next week

We will never know because both of them are scared to play and ESL has offered several of times to come to them. At this point ESL is not concerned about any team that is not interested in playing them. NV is very good and people can sleep on them if they want to.
Enjoy your season and any team can be beat on any given weekend. I applaud the individuals who don’t have fear in the heart. Some are only tough on hypothetical message board conversation while scheduling safe to keep a record in tact.

I will never disrespect any team by saying who ESL will best but I will say ESL is willing to play ANY team that YOU think will beat them! Make it happen!!

So something unexpected happened last night at a high school football game? Stunning!

Both teams played their guts out. As fans of HS football that's all you can ask of these kids. Congrats to ESL on the win. And NV kids shouldn't hang their head. Well done to both sides.

Who's the best team in Illinois? We'll know in 11 weeks. Until then, let the kids play the games and enjoy the ride. I'll bet there'll be a few more surprises along the way.

You think LWE or LA plays defense like what you saw last night? You need to watch these programs more. Let’s put it this way I guarantee when it comes time in the playoffs the defense will mean more than the offense. ESL and NV both need improvement on D.
I said they showed weakness and both teams showed it. Question is can they fix it? I don’t know because that was a lot of points for 1 game to think your the top team in the state.

The emails asking the play and you must have forgot that LA was in the classic ONLY if they didn’t have to play ESL! So we put them against Ofallon instead. There is no need for me to make up anything in terms of playing a high school football game. These are facts! I wouldn’t post if it wasn’t.

Again, it’s okay if those schools don’t want to play ESL. It’s not an issue. There is no cool points in making this up. ESL prefer to play in State every school receive a call whenever there is a game wanted posted on IHSA. ESL is always willing to travel. It is what it is.

Good to see you too Bones! Loved the folks from ESL...The older guy sitting to my right, after an ESL player slipped on that slick natural grass surface saying, "These millionaires up here need to put that turf field in...that's what they need to do!"....lol!
Typically our field is an advantage. Real grass, real football. It’s the way it’s meant to be played.

Let’s see, how many points have Batavia scored after playing ESL?

Let’s see Trinity scored 90 last night after being shutout by ESL defense.

High School kids have bad games at times as well as some schools play their hearts out for the moment. NV hadn’t scored over 30 this year but they needed every big play to have a chance at winning. They did an excellent job. They have a balance offense which will cause problems to a lot of teams.

As far as ESL offense, even in the lost to MC they put up over 500 yards of offense. Unfortunately to MC credit, the had 5 turnovers which was the difference in the game.

Based on your logic thus far, Batavia nor NV has a chance because they gave up a bunch of points to ESL.

I am not saying ESL is the best team in the state because I feel like it can never be proven but, I’m sure the respect was earned from the teams that were willing to play.

I know coach Z and scared isn’t in his playbook.
Stop it already. I think I can speak for the coach of LA. They aren’t afraid of anyone.

I don’t have to think. I know!! This isn’t speculation, it’s fact. Now you can ask them why they chose not to play if you like. Especially since you are so close to Coach Z.
I made my statement and I stand behind it 100%. We can move on if you like.

It’s pure conjecture on your part, unless you have spoken to coach Z and Holecek. Until then, zero “cool points” awarded.

Agreed
I will move on because this conversation is meaningless.
Now, the conversation is meaningless? As Fl
The declarants are unavailable for examination, therefore anything LHS says is inadmissible.

Says the puffed-up guy making trumped-up claims. This entire blog is full of conjecture. And before you even reply, try to be more original than stating the fact that I am a new member to the blog. As Flyerforlife eluded to, a guy just might know a lot more than you “think”.

As LHS has stated if you are so close to coach Z ask him or have contact Coach Sunkett and set up a game I am sure the people wants to see it.

Blatant lie.

The East coach knew exactly who Witherspoon was. His older brother Damone Witherspoone played for East all four years. His senior year was the former East coaches first year at East. My cousin played with those guys and "Little" Spoon was always around in the summer going to East's summer camps well before he was a Freshman.

I actually don't think (don't know for sure) that he was recruited by Sunkett. I always heard rumors that he was going to Althoff. Who knows what happened there.

Sunkett dang sure knew Lovett. Word is he was calling and texting him non stop until his mom finally caved in and let him transfer.

He did the same with Mookie Cooper over at Trinity, which PO'd the Trinity Head coach. You could easily follow that saga if you just followed the right folks on Twitter. I'll just leave it at that. That one didn't quite work out though. Right at the end of the "trade deadline" they just couldn't get it done.

Why not just become a college coach if you like recruiting so much?

First off I known spoons who family, Great grandfather grandfather all his uncles all die heart Flyer fans all wanted him to attend ESL in fact it was his grandfather that convinced his daughter to send him to East side. If you pm me we can meet with his grandfather to confirm. One last thing then I am done with this topic if Coach Sunkett is a good recruiter why is St. Louis still flooded with D-1. Shouldn’t they be playing for the Flyers??????

Okay, Mr. Belleville East, West, and Trinity. Being that you have the inside scoop on everything. Can you also share the names of the East St. Louis students who transferred into neighboring districts without an iota of a complaint from Sunkett?? The door actually swings both ways.

In reference to Belleville schools specifically, Where is your “hardware?” Check the tradition pre-Sunkett even. East St. Louis has a legendary well-established football program in the State of Illinois against ALL odds!!! Even against the odds of conference member programs who don’t want for them to play-up.......... East St. Louis ducks no one. Star talent likes Star programs. Neither Belleville programs traditionally even make the playoffs, let alone make it out of round 1.

So if a team declines to play ESL they are "scared". Nonsense. Sometimes there are other factors at play. I know for a fact Chicago Phillips, another team that played in the classic, reached out and wanted to play ESL a year or two ago but was told that they were trying to set up an ILL vs MO format so they played Chaminaide. Now, I don't think ESL would be "scared" to play Phillips for one sec. I also know Phillips isn't scared to play anyone and has played a few teams over the past few years that are much "scarier" to play than ESL and are on another level than any of the top teams in the state of ILL. The Phillips coaches weren't running around saying ESL is scared to play them, but to some random folks on the internet they could have, and they could have actually had the "emails" to show they reached out and it was declined. You guys act like playing a tough opponent and possibly losing a football game is "scary". lol.

LWE by 21 all day. Nobody will say ESL isn't stocked with talent and is a tough team to be year in and year out for teams in Illinois. But you guys are delusional about how good that team is. Like ESL is some national power or something. Top teams from Texas, FLA, CA, GA, Ohio, Pennsylvania would beat ESL like they beat Collinsville. Or maybe I should say like North Gwinnett beat ESL when they went down to GA a while back/ Like I've seen Flyers fans post regularly, "There's levels to this" and while I love HS football in Illinois, lets stop pretending ESL or even LWE/Loyola etc are national powerhouses. It's demonstrably untrue.

To the poster that mentioned that Trinity put up 90 points this past week. I see you didn't mention who they played. Why is that? Could it be that they may as well have play St. Mary's School for the blind? (Bishop Dubourg/Hancock Co-op). This week they have a real tough test in the area powerhouse "Living Word Christian" high school.

Aside from the fact that they are a small school, Trinity is nowhere near as good as they were last year. The only team in their class that will challenge them will be the team they played in the state championship last year Ritter.

Ritter by 30 this year IMO.

Your post reeks with “all things being equal” non-sense. Chicago Phillips? Really?? You’re unqualified to speak about the results of E-Side traveling far-and-wide to face stiff competition in their non-conference games because they are the only ones doing it. Did you actually see the Gwinnett game? I was there. We took that loss on the chin, again, against ALL odds. We go to their home turf knowing the odds and at times still prevail.
