...I made a throwaway comment about how this team looked early on and I want to revisit it now because it's not insignificant.

I love that we won today. I'm still floating. What a great win, and what a great set of individual performances by some of our guys.

But win or lose today...what I was hoping to see was competency. After two years of watching us not ready to play, staring at the sidelines while the play clock was running down, playing away from our strengths, getting pushed around, and generally being undisciplined and unprepared, it was really nice to see a competent football team. We were confident, we were not intimidated, we didn't make too many silly mistakes, we responded to adversity, we never panicked, and we looked well coached in all three phases of the game. Some specific call outs:

- This might be the best our special teams has ever looked to me. There was some concern here about Ruiz playing ahead of Christmann, and well, we saw why Ruiz. Dude is gonna be a pro kicker. And every kickoff was a touchback, which was a welcome sight after the **** we saw on kickoffs last year. It's really refreshing to me that this coaching staff plays the best player regardless of age and status of the player. You gotta earn every rep. That's the way it should be.

- Defense is better than expected. Secondary is an issue, but we knew it would be. The front seven is fine though. We played a lot of players and they all played fairly well. Part of that is ability, but a lot of that is coaching. We are well coached on the defensive side of the ball. Our defensive line played their asses off today and I think Jordan Davis is going to be a star for us.

- Our tackling was phenomenal today. I haven't been to a single practice but I can tell you that we hit a lot in practice because it shows up on the field in live reps. Shawn Freakin' Preston looked like Steve Atwater out there today the way he was cracking skulls in run support.

- Costello made a couple of poor decisions, but goodness, how awesome is it to have a QB that can throw the ball wherever he wants? And I know it was popular to **** on our WRs under jomo, but as some of us has always said, our WR issues weren't talent-related...they were scheme-related. We have talent at WR and it really showed today, even if we had a few drops.

- Kylin Hill is going to be great in this offense. And that's all I really have to say about that.

We still can improve a lot. And we really have to hope and pray for health - because we are thin in some spots. But I think this could be a really exciting season.

It is phenomenal how poorly coached this team was the last 2 years. This is a complete turnaround and it was done with no spring and in the middle of all the covid precautions and procedures.

I just can’t get over how awesome it is. It reminds me of watching the first few of Dan’s teams. You can just tell they are ready and you know what the teams are capable of. I can’t wait until next week.

One last thing is we had 4 turnovers in this game and we looked soooooooo much better than Moorhead’s teams. That says about all that needs to be said.

Not to be pedantic, but one kickoff wasn't a touchback, but I bet LSU wishes they took the touchback!

You are technically correct, of course, and I know you're saying that a little tongue-in-cheek, but he ran it out from 8 yards deep and got tackled at the 15. It's just awesome to see us kicking the ball into the end zone and not to the five yard line.

The fact that we had 4 turnovers and lost a 10 point lead in about 2 minutes on the road in Baton Rouge and did not panic says a lot about the players and the coaches.

I have no idea if LSU is any good but we looked really impressive today. And even if LSU sucks I have seen good MSU teams get eaten alive by bad LSU teams in Baton Rouge.

That stadium has been a nightmare for us historically and we walked in there and looked extremely poised. It’s amazing to think we had 600 yards passing and won by 10 and still left a lot on the table. This legitimately could’ve been a 3 touchdown win for us. That’s encouraging as heck considering where we were last year.

Now it’s a long season and there’s still a lot to be learned about this team and others in the league. But dang today was a blast. Can’t wait to watch this team play again.

I'm so glad we got Leach. That said, I just love that we set the SEC record for passing yards the first game post-Moorhead. That dude carried himself like a savant and was the sloppiest head coach maybe in the history of the league. What a breath of fresh air it is to have Leach calling it an above-average day in the post-game interview. That's what I want to hear. Someone who's been there before and acts like it. I know he's going to lose a game he shouldn't and we're going to be so disappointed when that happens, but the attention to detail is night and day from the previous staff. Night and day.

This times 1000. I definitely panicked and lost that loving feeling for a bit.

Shout out to Charles Cross. Besides one false start you didn't hear his name once, which is a good thing when you are playing left tackle. You can always be sure that LSU is going to athletes on the d-line and Cross was a brick wall. Really nice to have a good left tackle to complement a good QB.

Either IBDancin or Joe Moorhead himself is here downvoting posts.

Only bad parts I saw is that Hill still missed a few blocks (but at least he did block SOMEONE most times) and the Center, Smith, needs to get better (and he did as the day went on).

I can live with these mistakes.
