I'll admit it, I'm wooly. Kicking off the 2014 season with articles like this, a newly renovated stadium, and Southern Miss at home? DWS is gonna be rockin

the benefits of redshirting so many guys is just now really beginning to show and pay dividends at the right time. as far as the article goes, thats pretty much how i feel about the season. nothing is ever easy, but this season is an excellent opportunity from a depth, experience, schedule, and peer strength standpoint.

Irony is that kind of success would probably make it Mullen's last year as a Bulldog.

I would hate to see that, because I think he's showing a ton of head coaching development in who he's hired as assistants, and in next years recruiting activity.

I think there is some merit to that statement, but what job would be open next year that Mullen would leave State for? A lot of the big positions made coaching changes this past season. Aside from someone high profile being let go for F'ing up his situation (Petrino), I cant really think of another program who would be in the market for a coach next season.

Will Muschamp better have a good season next year, or UF may be looking for a coach.....and if Mullen were to truly have a killer year, he would probably be high on their list. Other than them, I really can't think of any other schools that would be a real threat......I really don't think Louisville could take him from us even if they wanted to (we could compete with them from a money standpoint, and I just can't see an SEC head coach leaving for a basketball school in the ACC). I guess it is possible that with another mediocre season, UGA could push Richt out, but that doesn't seem very likely. Other than a select few powerhouses, I really don't think there are too many schools that he would leave for.

Straight Wool

Then there’s that defense that finished 2013 fourth in the SEC and 18[SUP]th[/SUP] nationally in total defense. The Bulldogs, which lost just two defensive starters from last year, held their final four opponents to 20 or fewer points and allowed an average of 296.3 yards during that span.

Actually, we're replacing three starters, but we can replace every one of them with better talent (Cox/Hughes, Dez Harris/Bohanna (?), CJ via Nick James).

Muschamp and Richt at UGA worry me. Florida and Jawga have both shown they don't demand results very quickly. Hopefully ole Scotty put a non-compete clause in his contract.

No head coach has been poached among SEC teams in a decade.

This is true. Slive discourages the practice, if I am not mistaken. Of course that being said, if one of those schools got their heart set on somebody like Mullen, they would tell Slive to shut his yapper and he would do it.

It's always been frowned on to poach a coach from your own conference. But that doesn't stop if from happening. Just because it hasn't happened in the SEC in a decade doesn't mean it won't. But as I've said before, another school hiring Mullen is the least of my worries. If it happens, it means he's won a lot of games at MSU and we'll be a very attractive job for a lot of good candidates.

Past history is a pretty strong indicator, especially when it's closer to being a decade and a half. That's about the same time frame as the last time MSU has played in the SECCG. So there's your probability.

There have been better candidates than Mullen in that time. If MS teams meet their expectations this year, Freezus will get the call first - and he'd be more likely to jump ship.

What should scare you is a replay of 2010 - teams come in and loot the assistant pool.

I've been concerned about that for a while now. We have got to start getting more competitive in our assistant coaches' salaries.
