I understand they get graded harshly if not publicly bc of TV these days. Outside of that I don't know how they get punished for bad games or anything.

Apparently Steve Shaw is an empty suit because SEC officiating has only gotten worse under his watch. I liked him pretty well as an SEC ref but overall SEC officiating is as bad as its ever been right now. My biggest issue with SEC officiating is that almost all SEC refs have an affiliation with an SEC school. Now they aren't allowed to call their own school's games but you know they have built in biases against certain other SEC schools. I wish we could get non-biased refs in the league that just have a job to do and don't have agendas they would like to see play out because of their connection to another league school.

Bingo. There was this guy I knew at State whose dad was a line judge. Officiated 2 or 3 games that I know of, and I'm pretty sure he went to a different SEC school himself. How do they let that happen? Of all the millions the SEC makes every year, divvy up $2 million between all the refs to make that their ONLY job, and make sure none of them have any direct connections to any of the 14 schools. How hard is that?

ETA: In one game I remember (because I was sitting near him at the game) he completely blew a call in our favor. Everyone who knew this kid's dad was the ref was about to beat the crap out of him in the stands. I don't know if he was trying to compensate for his bias or actually is just a terrible ref, but knowing he had connections to State only made it worse for me. No one wins.
