Just read on Twitter via Bob Carskadon, " sounds like Elijah has officially joined the basketball team. "

Interesting... Seems like a reasonable time to start pulling double duty and getting his basketball legs to me. But bowl practice is also a pretty pivotal time in football development, especially at the QB position...

I know a couple of guys have done it successfully (Bruce Ellington), but I think it's almost impossible to play football and basketball and come anywhere near your potential in either sport. Staley needs to pick one and give it 100%.

Agree and disagree. Playing basketball will help him in football if he's playing WR or TE in football and near the basket in basketball. He's doing none of the above, though. He's listed as a guard.

Hope he switches to TE. He's the same size as Jimmy Graham.

I just think the guy wants to play something and i am ok with him playing basketball now as Dak is coming back. Hope he does go through bowl practice though.....he is our best QB prospect in my mind. Really big and very mobile. Cam Newton size and can really be a difference maker. He is going to have to learn the position and pay his dues....know young guys hate to hear that.....to lead this program though. But he can do it and be really successful.

Fitz will be going thru his second bowl practice. I think staley is putting himself a long way behind fitz. If staley has a nice year in hoops, I think he may stay with ray

I think Fitzgerald is going to be our starter after Dak graduates.

When does ...

Jimmy Graham's 6-7, 275 size = Elijah's 6-6, 235 size. Few football players can add 40 pounds of muscle quickly especially when they are practicing & playing college basketball. Ask Jarvis Varnado ... it's taken him 8 years to add 20 pounds.

Fitz is the more mobile guy...

I've even heard that Fitz is the fastest Qb we have on roster. Mullen said on his radio show this season that both the Freshmen had the biggest arms on the team. It will work it self out.

I think he could easily add 30 lbs if he wasn't conditioning to be a QB and 2 guard.

Vanardo played when we did not make our players work out and be in a conditioning program. He also could have been one of those guys that just can't gain weight.

If he can easily add 20-30 lbs, I wouldn't mind seeing him at DE.

Funny how

he wasn't forced to workout at State (and never gained weight), but then gets to the NBA where he would have to work out (and still doesn't gain weight). That damn Stansbury!

Not sure if the poster you responded to meant Graham no or coming out of college, but Staley would have 4 years to put on 25lbs and match Graham's weight at the combine of 260. So then add another handful of years in the NFL and perhaps he would add another 15 to get to 275.
Hardly extreme.

Yeah, Varnado being skinny is one thing you can't really blame Stansbury for.

If they are anywhere close in physical talent, I don't know how Staley is going to pass him if he is skipping bowl workouts.

If he is a 6'6" SG, he may need to stick with bball anyway.

/I still hope to see the big athletic lefty at QB.

Being a 6'6" SG isn't that big of a deal as far as what's best for Staley. Outside of threes that specialize in Defense and shooting, the skillset in the NBA isn't that different between 2's and 3's. If he's really an NBA talent, he should probably focus on basketball. Even if he ends up spending his career in Europe, his career can be so much longer in basketball (and with fewer health effects) that basketball would probably be the more financially lucrative. But if he's not an NBA talent, he will have a much better chance of gettinga good payday in football as a QB or Jimmy Graham type TE/WR.

If he's the better player, it will show through. Whichever can see the field better and deliver the ball with touch will likely win the job, and that is not something you can teach

There isn't really a defined small forward spot in college, so they're sometimes listed as guards. Ravern was always listed as a guard.

Well if he's a 6'6" SF he needs to focus on football. If he's a 6'6" SG he needs to focus on basketball.

At 6'6", if you have to guard LeBron, Melo, or Durant... Forget it. If you're on guys like Tyreke? Awesome sauce. I guess we just need to see his shot.

Agreed. He RT'd a guy saying how he hopes Dak leaves and he starts at QB next year. Mullen needs to tell him to shut his Twitter account down. He tweets a lot of dumb **** quite regularly.

Not always. Tony Allen is 6'4" and guards all those guys as well as anyone. I don't suppose Staley is an elite defender like Allen though; very few are.

I'm anxious to see his shot as well. I read in some old recruiting reports that he's good out to 18 feet, which I think would render him pretty effective at least in college as a perimeter player or wing, but it would be great if he surprises us with consistent 3-point range.

Listed as a guard.

Don't care what the same people that said Rashun Dixon was 250 have him listed -- he's a 3. The same position we've seen Fred Thomas in most of the time for his first 2 years(playing out of position by necessity, when he's actually a 2, which he is primarily playing thusfar this year and we've seen the benefit)...

Staley has potential to develop into a guy that can play the 2 as he develops a jumpshot and range -- but that's not what he currently is...
