Elliot disappointment

I know every school has them, and coaches make do (ala find JUCO rbs like JJ, Ballard, etc) but just looking at Elliots offer list (Bama, FSU, UGA, Ark, Ole Miss of course), video, and description by probably porn-fro, was it just the ACL injury or did he ever have a"it" factor?

I just don't when, if ever, he has displayed an inclining of being just a good back. That one 4th qtr run last year during Egg Bowl? Maybe that one special teams play against Auburn last year? Anybody got anything? Or can we just write him off and wait for next supposed great rb in MS and rest our hat on Ballard for next year as well? Grindle's cousin/nephew?</p>

Most of those big runs were on the dive play with Dixon going the other direction. I am not ripping on Elliott but can you imagine how bad that Conner must have been to be 4th on the depth chart.

I think he has lost his footing in the RB pecking order. He seems to have had a decent nose for the ball on special teams in the past.

Didn't think about Dixon and Elliot last year being in the backfield together. It doesn't help his case at all considernig that too. I see a hard runner in Ballard at times, we need him to step up big this game.</p>

That's what 45 carries? He should have that in 3 games not 5. Note that Georgia he came close to what he should've had for touches and that was also arguably the best game we've played all year.

Give Ballard the damn ball more. He needs at least 15 a game to where he can get into a rythym and and actually get going.

look running back is one of the only positions you can come in and contribute immediately and either you have it or you dont. Yes you can get better, understand pad level, film etc better through time but he doesnt have it. He is a bust at running back, period. Im sure hes a fine young man but SEC running back he is not. He just peaked as a highschool senior in a small school. Happens alot, I.E. Brian Darden (Warren Central) although thats a bigger school but it happens. Hes a junior and if he doesnt have it by now - it aint happinin.

but I think it was a small school. It's hard to project players that don't play against a lot of quality competition.
Don't know if it's the case with Elliot, but maybe he was just a good athlete that looked great playing against people that weren't as athletic as him, but now doesn't bring a ton to the table that he is competing against equal and better athletes.

and of course people started making up lame *** excuses and just said that he needed the ball more. Probably won't see any of them in this thread though, they've finally realized what many of us saw a long time ago.

And he doesn't hit the hole very hard. There have been times the hole was there but he tried to tip-toe through and the hole collapsed on him. I thought he ran well his RS freshman year and I think the knee injury has played a large part in his present running style. I've torn both ACL's and rehabbed and came back to play baseball. It took a while to block out the first iniury but once I said what the 17, I was back playing like nothing ever happened. Maybe he needs a shrink or hypnotist to block out the injury but it appears that will never happen. There is still time, but for the time being we need to go with Ballard, Perkins, Ralph, and the occasional Bumphis in the Mad Dawg formation.

Elliott came from Okolona. I hope that is not the case for Perkins. He came from St Joe. I really think that we just have not found the way to use him yet. </p>

Way too early to think that Perkins won't live up to expectations. He is still learning & adjusting to the college game.

It takes more touches than he's had for most people to adjust to SEC ball. People just have to learn how to play against better competition. Most common example is speedsters from high school having to learn that you can't just try to bounce runs outside and then outrace everybody to the side line. Except for the freaks, that just results in negative yard plays.

That said, I don't think Perkins is a primary back.I think Ballard is a solid to good but not great everydown back, and that we need somebody in the pipeline or else will have to go Juco against after next year. </p>

1. I read the book Meat Market about Ed Orgeron and recruiting. According to the book, Ole Miss recruited him hard, but had questions about his ability. It came back to the fact that he didn't just dominate the competition. SEC caliber players should dominate low-level competition. Tobias Singleton or Chad Bumphis may get periodically shutdown playing at 5A or 6A high schools, but you shouldn't get shutdown playing at 1A or 2A high schools if you think you are SEC caliber. Okolona wasn't exactly competing with Meridian, South Panola, Olive Branch, Clinton, Madison Central, etc.

2. His combine numbers weren't impressive. According to things like benchpress, vertical jump, 40-time, etc., we would have been better off signing Nathan Jew from Jackson Academy to run the football. Once again, he didn't just jump off the charts when compared to other high school players, many who never played past high school.

It makes you wonder if his recruiting kinda snowballed in his favor, resulting in him being mythically touted to be something he wasn't. I've yet to be impressed with anything he has done at MSU, before the knee injury or after.

One thing to always, always, always remember about recruiting sites is that they try to cater to their customers. That means pimping guys that play for schools that have a higher number of subscribers. That means that often times in Gene and Yancy's case guys from the Jackson Metro area (Doug Buckles), the coast (Antonio Hargro), Tupelo (Chris Garrett/ Robert Elliott) and Meridian (Cordera Eason) are often pimped more.

It's great because the subscriber can go down to the area school and watch the possible future of MSU/UM football before they become the next Egg Bowl star. They can go to the message board and say I saw __ and here's what I think about him. It makes them appear to be informed and involved, which of course means more subscriptions, and thus, more money.

The thing about Elliott is he also did the recruiting special platter route. He waited until the very end to commit. Some people like to have the press conference with the baseball hats. That means that he got a lot more attention from people because it was unknown what he would do. That also means more scrutiny when he got to college.

Other people like to just go ahead and commit and let that be it.

I am from Chickasaw County and I saw Elliot play in high school once or twice. I can't ever remember him doing anything in those games that impressed me. He is fast, quick and is a really good athlete. So many of us can only dream of his ability but he didn't transfer it into making plays then and certainly not now. Give Ballard the ball! I really believe that Elliot has more God given ability but Ballard gets much more out of what God gave him.

1. Ballard - Vic is obviously the more seasoned guy. Nothing he does is pretty, but everything he does seems to be effective. He hits the hole pretty well most of the time and appears to have good vision and balance. He'll also take one to the house if you give him a little room to work. I thought it was obvious after the Memphis game that he should be the #1 and the "by committee" approach should be shut down. Also, the kid is money in the red zone, and you've gottta havea guy like that if you wanna win in the SEC.

2. Elliott - Don't know if he was ever gonna be great, but Robert just doesn't seem to be the same after the knee injury. This year he appears healthy but has obviously added some weight and doesn't really look comfortable with it. At this point in his career, I think a position change shouldn't be out of the question, especially since he'll finish out his career playing behind Ballard if he stays at RB.

3. Perkins - The little fella is an interesting one. He's built like an action figure and has speed, but he has to have some of the worst feet I've ever seen on a running back, not to mention no vision. If you watch closely, he's constantly tripping over his own feet as he goes through the hole, and most of the times he's got his head down instead of up watching the play develop as he takes the hand-off.........costs himself a lot of yards. These are some of the problems you have with the high school speedster-types though because a guy usually isn't concerned with fundamentals when he knows he can just run away from everybody........until they start playing better competition, of course.</p>
