Enough with the no head coaching experience

Just look at Hermann and Narduzzi. The top programs produce top coaches. These guys have learned from the best and it's no surprise that they succeed when given the chance. Yes it's a risk, but hiring any new HC is a risk. I'd rather take my chances here than with a Golden or Cristobal. Chris Ash has been watching how Meyer runs a football team and I'm certain this will shape him as a head coach. We're not talking about just any coordinator, we're talking about a coordinator who has been working under one of the top coaches in the country - a huge difference IMO. I love this hire!

Its a risk for sure without head coaching experience, but he is impressive, has a vision and philosophy of defense, seems like he will hold people accountable. Has energy, is a student of the game, and wants the job.

Any hire is a risk, but from what I can gather so far, he is better than a failed retread with head coaching experience, and may be one of the top 2 or 3 coordinators we could have gotten.

Given our money constraints, we know we were not going to spend 4.5 million for a coach, I think we did pretty well.

Hope he can recruit, and I hope the players get excited about his vision.

You don't coach at tOSU with Urban Meyer unless you are good, very good. Urban was WR coach at Notre Dame and took his first HC job at Bowling Green. He had a great first year as HC. May Ash do the same for RU!

It's a solid hire. Will it pan out? That remains to be seen.

It's weird to see otherwise intelligent people staking out positions on this as if there's some obvious outcome. The outcome is not obvious at all. It's never obvious.

I think what's obvious is that Ash can coach defenses pretty well when he has a stable of really good players to work with. It's obvious that OSU fans are unhappy to lose him (but are already moving on). It's obvious that he has been exposed to some very good coaches in his career and that he's going to bring that experience to RU.

What's not yet obvious is if he can put together a winning coaching staff here at RU. It's not obvious that he or his staff will be able to significantly improve recruiting over what Schiano or Flood could do. It's not obvious that he'll be a good enough HC to get the program to the point that we're having winning conference records within a couple/few years.

It's also not obvious that Hobbs statements about money not being an issue were anything more than the typical AD-speak ********. This was not (or should not have been) a very expensive hire.

For the non-obvious stuff, we're going to have to wait and see. Making bold proclamations that he'll be great or awful screams "my intellect is overridden by my emotions and desires".

The only decent guys out there with head coach experience were Mullen and Narduzzi. Mullen was not worth the pricetag and Narduzzi is pretty much the same as Ash, but Ash is much cheaper.

Houston and Hermann had a nice season. I don't judge based on 1 year. Flood in his first year was 1 bad officiating call away from having Rutgers play in the Sugar Bowl. Hermann is not facing Michigan State, Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State every year. If you want to annoint him a success to make you feel good about Ash, go ahead.

I could understand HC experience needed for a coach coming from the boonies. But being a coordinator at top programs (like GS was) is nice. You want a hungry young coach from a top program more often than you want a retread who had his moments of glory. Even in the NFL you dont get many repeaters on multiple teams

True, but I still maintain that Houston was not bumping heads with Florida State, Clemson, VT as Miami is every year. Miami went down hill when they joined the ACC.

That is true that Houston playing SMU is different than Miami/Florida State. But in my opinion is that it's all about coaching. When Temple and Rutgers were conference equals, Golden got the Jersey kids who "weren't good enough to play for Rutgers" (stupid phrase but not my words), and those who didn't want to play for Schiano (and there were more of these than some Schiano fans would like to admit). And what I've been saying for a couple of years during his time in Miami is that those kids, who grew up Miami fans, wanted no part of Golden and D'Onfrio. These two cant/won't make the adjustments in game or in scheme. So basically it would be the SOS from the Flood years.

At least with Ash, you will get someone who is hungry and ready to prove that he is HC material and that his team in charge will be competitive, unlike a third chance for Golden.

Oh. And I will agree with the Miami has gone downhill quote if Mark Richt can't turn Miami around.

Just remember that Pat Fitzgerald at Northwestern was never a coordinator and was a position coach when he was hired as HC in 2006. He had a few clunker seasons in that time, but took the Wildcats to five bowls, and will do another bowl this year.

I love the hire! If you're not sure watch the posted interviews. You'll feel better. He's a coach's coach- think gym rat. Exactly what we need and not a bull crapper, a straight shooter!
