From 1970 - 2012:

  • UM Average Win Total: 5.74
  • MSU Average Win Total: 5.42

The largest combined win total for both teams in a given year was 1992 for a total of 16.

1998 and 2005 tied for the fewest combined wins at 6.

Even during the crappiest "set" of years that I can remember (2001 - 2006) when we averaged 2.83 wins/year, UM only averaged 5.83/year. That was a lot of years of suckitude for them to lock up the state in recruiting and coaching!

Neither MSU, nor Ole Miss is going to run off and leave the other for an extended period. It just won't happen. I will admit that it brings joy when MSU is on the rise (e.g. the intersection of Mullen and Nutt) and brings grief when UM appears to be on the rise (e.g. right now when our Mullen is frozen).

That does not, however, give me any reason to believe that their trajectory is straight up from here forward, any more than I believe that our trajectory is straight down. Based on the data, the average trajectory for both teams, if charted, would make a chart that looked like an advertisement for Cialis.

I will support other standard message board paranoia, just not the one listed in the subject of this post...

Your are correct sir. The more things change, the more they stay the same, and everything goes in cycles. Although there is always the tendency to compare the two programs because it makes for good press and trash talk, State needs to take care of its own business and not be concerned about other things over which it has not control. I've been around awhile. There are 12 other teams in the SEC aside from these two. I'm not sticking my head in the sand. We have obstacles to overcome. Hopefully Dan is the guy to do it. Nobody else has done it on a consistent basis over a long period of time. It is also not accepting mediocrity, under present states of other programs, to be happy for NOW with 6 to 8 win seasons on a consistent basis.
