From the Boston Globe:

Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein has also had a long chat with Jonathan Papelbon on comments which first appeared on WEEI.com where Papelbon expressed reservations about including Billy Wagner into the bullpen and how that would impact roles. "I think Pap feels he was misunderstood," Epstein said. "He's not a Rhodes Scholar to begin with. When I talked to him directly about it he couldn't have been more excited."

If someone said about me, "He's not a Rhodes Scholar to begin with..." I'd probably just say "ehhh ok, I know I'm not."</p>

despite its literal interpretation. Its like when you say "He's not very smart"....well, there are a lot of people that are not "very smart", but when you say that, its an insult.

I don't think Epstein meant it as an insult, nor do I think Papelbon took it that way. I thought it was funny. Papelbon has a reputation of being carefree, loose, and not always politically correct. Remember some of the crap he said on Leno/Letterman/Conan (can't remember which) a few years back. The guy is just a goofball. I think that is what Epstein meant. He is just a goofball.

where Papelbon was the speaker was gold. Honestly, the biggest regret of my life was not being there to see the looks on Polk's sheep when Paps got up there and talked about the size, or lack thereof, of Polk's unit. Not to mention talking about drinking while playing baseball at State and questioning Polk's sexual orientation.
