Surf Club. CC Peppers on College Avenue just tasted better. California cheesesteak with Bay Fries. I just remember our nights out at the Skeller, then to the Gaff then getting whatever grease pit food at Hardees. Sometimes we even ate those crap hot dogs at Uni Mart. Great times. My one roommate and best friend from PSU passed away a few years ago. She had MS. I try to honor her every time I go to Happy Valley by getting CC Peppers and saying a brief prayer outside our old spots.

One of the interesting things about continuing to live in State College is what people view as tradition. Some things listed here were very short lived. In a college town tradition is formed in for years.

What was the upstairs restaurant on College that had the great strombolis? They made a whole wheat spinach and mushroom stromboli that I still crave 47 years later!

Oh, and THE BEST fried chicken I've ever had was from the A&P in the plaza off of Westerly Parkway. Short hike from Briarwood for a 'short bucket' (4 piece). Would finish it before I made it back to the apartment.

No, not Joe, this time.

Chicken Cosmo: Gone

Ye Olde College Diner and Grilled Stickies: Gone

Baby’s: Gone

The Deli: Gone

Donuts To Go and Chocolate Bismarcks: Gone

Bubba’s Breakaway: Gone

Is there an on-going conspiracy to get rid of all the good food at PSU? I bet there is. We need a sleuth.

😞
You can still get stickies at the Creamery, right?

Players
Ye old college diner
Baby's
Hiway pizza
Gumby's
Spat's

But the Brewery lives on!
Talked to the owner of Hi-Way shortly after they re-closed their spot next to McLanahan's. She told me there was some bizarre discrepancy with the building's owner where the lease was coming up, and Hi-Way was prepared to re-sign, and then the owner just pulled it without notice. No contact. No discussion. No nothing. Hi-Way ownership says they have no idea what happened.

They still have a location further down College Ave.

The Brickhouse is gone, too, right?

And don’t forget Roy Rogers. Loved dipping fries into horseradish sauce.

Loved that place. First ate there when I was in 8th grade. We were up at the state HS wrestling tournament prior to it moving to Hershey. It kind of became nostalgic to me during my time there.

I'll visit an Arby's maybe twice a year, and that's precisely what you do with the fries.

I think it was leveled 1984/85 ish
Bon Appétit" my friends, "enjoy your meal.

"The Train Station closed its doors in 1986, long before virtually all current undergrads were even born. As the name would suggest, the Train Station was a railroad-themed restaurant and bar. Even more than 30 years later, plenty of alumni still swear by the bar’s free mustard and pretzels, release valve drink, and French onion soup.

The release valve was such a popular drink that you can still find its recipe online, as credited to the classic State College bar. To make it, you’ll need grenadine, pineapple juice, white rum, and vodka. Conductor hats aren’t a requirement, but they’d certainly be a nice finishing touch."

LINK: Downtown Historical Buildings: Telling State College's History Through Architecture

Hotel State College

The well-loved Corner Room restaurant joined the building in 1926 when new owners took over the hotel,
and the term “The Corner” was first used to describe the location around that same time.

The Glennland Building

"The Glennland Building had a pool in its basement that was used for both recreational and university events — many Penn State men were required to swim its length to graduate. The building also housed a number of commercial retailers, including WMAJ, State College’s first radio station. Sadly, the Glennland Building pool was closed in 1968 and the space was converted to offices. However, the colorful tiles from the pool remain as decoration in many of the office spaces today."

That's where I first had French onion soup and remember it whenever I have it.

My condolences on the loss of your friend.

Skeller then Gaff was how I started out almost every Friday that we didn’t have a party in our townhouse.

I used to subsist on pickled sausage sold at most of the townie bars.
For real food the Galleria was decent.

The average life of a restaurant is something like 4 to 5 years. These places aren’t going to last forever folks.
