So Eric LeGrand came out with his own line of bourbon a few months ago. A couple of Fridays ago he had a Meet and Greet down at the Costco in Willowbrook:

I went down and grabbed a bottle, gonna add it to the tailgate bar, and also took the time to talk with him for a bit:

Here's his website:

$5.20 of every case sold of Eric LeGrand Bourbon is donated to the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation to support spinal cord injury research.

What’s in the bottle? Sourced Kentucky straight bourbon, no age statement (though at least 2 years old, obviously).

It’s solid stuff, ever so slightly defying expectations of what has become a fairly well-worn category. The nose evokes coconut husks, torched brown sugar, and some barrel char, tempering the sweetness and giving the wood a little more room to shine. It never smells young, but rather comes across as fairly well balanced, a lightly ashy quality lingering in the glass.

The whiskey continues to develop this profile on the palate, here the coconut notes taking on a green coconut character, lightly sweet and tropical at times. Notes of almond and nougat fold in more traditional nutty notes, before lots of vanilla, almost like a cream soda, comes into view. This straightforward, effusive brightness is balanced out by just enough gritty barrel char and the lightest hint of black cherry, all of which complement the proceedings. The finish is sweeter, but only a little, with coconut nectar notes making a small reprise.

88 proof.

I think it is pretty good and have bought a couple bottles. Hopefully Eric sees great success with this venture.

So we cracked the bottle at the Northwestern Tailgate: it was front and center in the display:

The overall impression from the group was that it is a good bourbon, fairly smooth with decent flavor. I liked it, but wonder if they'd consider putting out a more aged version of it.

The contract distiller certainly has older distillate in stock. Whether the terms would be consistent with EL's business model would need to be determined. The current offering is already a little pricey for what it is.

You lost me @ coconut 🙊, but I'd 100% show up to support him and his product. He is a great guy and his Mom is awesome as well.
