The inaugural Border War Gateway Scholarship Football Classic should provide plenty of bragging rights to talk about after it’s over. The three-game event will be held at Clyde C. Jordan Stadium in East St. Louis on Saturday, September 3.

Cahokia against Public High League team Sumner at 1 p.m. Game No. 2 will be Belleville Althoff vs. Jefferson City Helias. The marque match-up will be CBC vs. East St. Louis in a battle of traditional powerhouse programs, which will begin at 7 p.m.

Playing in their first game since September 26, 2015 due to a teachers strike last seasons, the Flyers embarrassed Chicago power Providence Catholic 34-3 to open the season. Meanwhile, CBC put a whipping on Christian Brothers (Memphis) 52-17 to move to 2-0. CBC has outscored its first two opponents 100-17.

The Cadets, who are the six-time defending Metro Catholic Conference champions, sport a 29-1 record to date in their last 30 games.Sophomore quarterback Brett Gabbert, who is the younger brother of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Blaine Gabbert, is 22-33 for 372 yards and three touchdowns. The Cadets quarterback has an arsenal of receivers that East St. Louis might not see all season long.

Leading the way is the talented duo of juniors Kamryn Babb (6’2 190) and Cameron Brown (6’ 175). Babb has offers from Ohio St., Michigan St. Wisconsin, Nebraska among others. Brown has offers from Iowa, Iowa St. Mizzou, Illinois. In addition, Gabbert has some other receivers who will test the Flyers’ secondary in Damon Jones (6’3 185) and Josh Wallace (6’5 205).

What will make this a good game is that while the Flyers' offense shined during its opener, their defense made the loudest statement.

James “Bone Crusher” Knight, LaMontre’ “State Street” Harvey, Terrenz Lagrone, and the rest of the defensive unit limited the Celtics to three first downs in the first half, with two of them coming via penalty. They held highly touted Providence Catholic running back Richie Warfield to 17 yards on 12 carries.

Should be one hell of a game in a great atmosphere!

CBC and ESL have played three times since 1968 with the two previous contests ending in a tie.

Twitter blew up with MO fans claiming the refs "cheated." Anyone have the story on that? Probably just sour grapes but curious to hear it.

Post Dispatch says there was a late hit that CBC was called for that extended the game-winning drive. CBC coach quoted - paraphrasing - my boys played to the whistle.

Now, would I be shocked at some home cooking at 10:15 on a Saturday night in the Boogie? Not one bit.

That said, only the folks who saw can really say for sure. I just read the game account.

There was a ton of talent on the field, including ESL's Anderson who ran the rock 40 times for 253 yards.

Per the STL Post: In front of a packed and raucous crowd, East St. Louis and CBC put on a mesmerizing performance. There were five lead changes, trick plays, drama and clutch performances. Missouri football coach Barry Odom's helicopter even landed to the south of the field moments before halftime.

Ok not taking anything away from CBC they are a great football team with very good D1 prospects. CBC has to learn to play football. They had several personal fouls against them as well as Esl for retaliation. If CBC correct those issues no doubt will win state title in Missouri. When I say several too many. The Flyers had too many as well. Some were plain to see. But overall great great game CBC is better than I though.

Flyers could have have put the game away when leading 16-7 . But fail to complete the task. CBC then pulled half back pass. For a touchdown that put them right back in the game it was a game from then on as momentum shifted back to cbc. As I stated as for as the refs there were alot of personal fouls on both teams throughout the night. As. I have said in other post if cbc just play football. And leave the drama off the field wI'll be very good football team. One thing you will not punk an esl football team that will not happen hence the personal fouls for retaliation on Esl

I was stunned by this result. I think CBC is far and away the best team in Missouri. ESL will for sure be in the mix for the state's best in Illinois at the end of the year if they haven't proven it already. Happy for those kids

Kids quickly learn to play to the end of the play, not the whistle. CBC coach shouldn't say stupid things like that.

I have no idea why I feel this way, but I love it when Eastside is playing good football!

I'll offer two reasons why: It's tradition - if you win a title with a good ESL team in the bracket, it means a bit more, especially if you can beat them at home.

Second, a "good" ESL team means the best of IL are very competitive at the national level. Let's face it folks, ya'll CRAVE a national stage. Someone beats a "hyped" Flyer team without a bad blemish on their record, shoot, crown "they a$$" in the USA Today Top 25!
