No they are going down because they got political.
No - they are going down because too many people who don't care about sports are dropping cable subscriptions and going with streaming packages that don't have ESPN. In the past, they paid for ESPN as part of a bigger package. Not anymore. It has nothing to do with being political.

I agree that is the bigger factor. To say it has nothing to do with it would imply no one has cut espn or stopped watching for those reasons and 100% disagree with that.

Its just a matter of time til the whole network sinks.

I watch sports to remove myself from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and I don't want to hear anything political with my sports. I don't want to hear it even if I agree 100% with what they are saying.

ESPN can't just report about sports, they have to report about social justice, transgenderism and whatever the liberal cause of the day might be. ESPN was awesome when you got real sports reporting and they filled in the gaps with stuff like Australasian Rules Football, swamp buggy racing and roller derby.
Agree. I watch sports to get away from hearing about the economy, politics, social topics, etc.

I liked JVG. Their in-game commentary crews are solid though not all individuals are. Their studio coverage is generally horrendous outside of JJ Redick though, and Kendrick Perkins is a complete embarrassment to the profession.
Perkins can’t even speak proper English and yet he keeps his job. He’s terrible and should of never been hired.

The Post reported Friday morning ESPN is letting go of around 20 on-air personalities in an effort to save tens of millions of dollars.

Van Gundy, 61, has been with ESPN for 16 years, calling the Finals with play-by-player Mike Breen and co-game analyst, Mark Jackson.

Van Gundy’s exact salary is not known, but he was making millions.
He ends his ABC/ESPN career just shy of a hundred NBA Finals games!
Van Gundy is old, male, and white - truly a deadly trio if you're working for Disney. Those three factors alone automatically put his head on the chopping block.

What has happened to sports is the same thing that happened to Hollywood. Years ago actors weren't that different from plumbers, salesmen, and the like. Then they started making ungodly amounts of money which brings an inflated sense of importance. Suddenly they think their views on political topics must be heard. I don't want to hear about LeBron's politics any more than a liberal wants to hear Curt Schilling's. Your vote doesn't count more than mine. Therefore your opinion doesn't either.

A big part of that for me is that you no longer need ESPN for scores and highlights. That was a huge part of who they were. Now that we have that at our fingertips 24/7, there is no need for that. I remember waiting for SportsCenter and not wanting to miss it because I wanted highlights.
I remember watching the McDonald's all American game waiting for free throws so I could hear where they were going to college. Times have definitely changed.

Was the racist Mark Jones (scared police would shoot him if they gave him an escort to the stadium) fired? He is a despicable human being. If you're not familiar, just do a search on his past comments.

I absolutely never listen to him, no matter who is playing.

That's pretty bad, but not surprising. We really have brought up a generation of idiots

Right...has nothing to do with woke/politics for me. I don't find the shows entertaining or informative. Twitter has already given me the info/highlights I was looking for and have no desire to listen to analysis as I've gotten older.
this. overboard on the supply of news/info/scores...

A lot of innocent black people are afraid of being shot by police. We have seen innocent black people shot by police. Just because he expressed those concerns doesn't mean he is a racist. You also have no business discussing race on this forum.

Didn't even know about the Perkins comments until this thread. I never watch ESPN anymore. Unbelievable that he still has a job.

No…Mark Jackson made some comment to JVG about how he would be scared in his neighborhood. JVG replied something like, “I’m supposed to be scared of the blonde haired, blue eyed kids in your neighborhood?”

I think JVG missed the next game. Was explained that his daughter was graduating. Definitely could have been true, but I wondered at the time if it was a silent suspension.
If that is what passes for "borderline racist" in 2023 then we are totally screwed as a nation. Van Gundy was responding to Jackson's dig by saying Jackson now lives in a safer, mostly white neighborhood. At least that's how I took it. It was a sarcastic clap back to be sure but, hardly "borderline racist". That's absurd.

As an aside, I seriously doubt any current or successful former NBA players still live in "the hood". They get their guaranteed money and buy a mansion up in the hills or a gated community with mostly rich white neighbors. Can't say as I blame them and I think we all agree there is a certain level of hypocrisy in the lives of NBA players.

Read his past comments. They are easy to find. Pretty telling what kind of person he is.

And you have no business telling me what my business is.

I understand what he was saying. The obvious implication was that he wouldn’t be scared of white kids. So who should he be afraid of?

It was indelicate at best over the public airwaves, and especially given our current climate.

Also, I said “arguably” racist, not borderline racist. In other words, it was the kind of comment that some will argue as racist in 2023 America.

Disney lost $122 billion last year.

Go Woke, Go Broke.
Just so others don’t pass along your “info” that Disney lost 122 billion last year, without realizing the difference between net income and market cap, Disney’s 12 month trailing earnings are $2.25 per share. And per their earnings reports…
  • Disney net income for the quarter ending March 31, 2023 was $1.271B, a 170.43% increase year-over-year.
  • Disney net income for the twelve months ending March 31, 2023 was $4.121B, a 55.45% increase year-over-year.
  • Disney annual net income for 2022 was $3.145B, a 57.64% increase from 2021.

Upset they fired Laphonso Ellis. He was great on Gameday, and was always smiling and talked good about the cats.

To be honest, I thought Ellis sucked in his role. The guy provided nothing of value, and little insight to the game. It was always funny watching Bilas and Greenberg go back and forth on something with Rece Davis trying to moderate, and Ellis would sit there and look absolutely clueless.

Didn't take long for the zombies to repeat their woke broke bumper sticker line (see if you can go a week without mentioning Bud Light, Disney, or the word woke because I don't think some of you can).

Here's the thing, we're months away from 2024. It's not 1998 any longer. Give me three reasons why you'd turn on an ESPN channel without one of those reasons being to watch your team. I don't think you can. Unfortunately, ESPN made a couple decisions years ago that in a way doomed them. They decided to mimic cable news by having two personalities or a table of personalities having constant "takes" and disagreeing with each other. Well now we can all do that with each other so what makes ESPN different? The second terrible decision was paying some of these media personalities as if they're equal to or bigger than the sport they're arguing about. It makes no sense for an on-air personality on ESPN to receive millions and millions of dollars and have a mansion as if they're Tom Brady. I mean, there's literally no reason to watch Sportscenter anymore. There's no reason to wait for the ticker for scores now either. ESPN is a bit of a dinosaur.
