Anyone know what they base the blackout on? Is it your actual location or the location of the account you are using to log in? Guessing its the actual location, but I've never tried to use my account while traveling like I will be this weekend.

Mother 17er. I knew that it was going to be blacked out in OB, but I thought I might be able to catch it in Memphis. Looks like that ain't happening. Well, I guess it's either sportsbar or PPV at home for me

Then why wouldn't you open an account with a different zip code that isn't in a blacked out area??

ETA: I was responding to his comment about it being an issue with zip code, not service provider. Sorry for the confusion/ignorance. I just went to the watchespn site and it didn't ask me for any info to start watching so I didn't know it was dependent on your service.

You mean start paying for interwebs or cable service somewhere outside of the blacked out area even though you don't live there? You just showed the man who's boss!

You would think they would have figured out how to insert personalized ads into the ESPN3 stream and make it profitable for you to watch for free, but old media is a dinosaur. You need only look at this blackout map (and others like it) to see why people go to shady corners of the internet to 'pirate' the video stream.

The blackout is based off the IP address of your computer. You can bypass this by using a proxy server. Basically when surfing the web you put out a false IP address. This is usually done as a security measure to hide your actual location but it undermines things like blackouts on ESPN3. There is a thread on Tigerdroppings somewhere about how to get around ESPN3 blackouts.

I am not gonna link it because I don't know how the mods feel about doing such a thing, and I don't want to be liable for anything that you do or don't do.

That's what I was thinking. Why would anyone pay for Internet service in a city they don't live in? How would they even get it connected since they don't own anything there to connect it to?

Is this a real question?

I've got to say, there are lots of things I laugh at on here. But THIS has got to be one of the most hilarious things I've ever seen some one say on a message board.

I did just that. One of my offices is in Louisiana and I made sure and had my company cellphone billed to that address. As long as the blackout does not cover LA, I can watch the games on apple tv through my phone.

find someone not in the blackout area, have them log on to espn3, hook that to their tv, and then set up a webcam, log in to skype and watch it there.

/yeah, I am kidding.

For some reason they've been blocked in TX too lately, even when the map says they aren't. Great job with that TV contract Slive, I said it was way too long when first signed. We went and got a TX school just for their market, yet half the games aren't show here. No CSS, no FSN, etc. Even WatchESPN was blacked out here.

What you do is - rent an apartment in that city, buy a computer, get internet, go back to your house in the town you actually live in, and remote into that PC so you can watch the game.

All for only $1500/month.

Or just pay $35-$40 for PPV. Or hell - buy a ticket.
