It's a strongly worded letter to avoid using an athlete's likeness for personal gain. Apparently some have been doing that. He said that most have complied with his request to stop, but unfortunately others have not, and it's going to take legal action. It would really be a shame if some selfish person continued to do it to the extent of getting a player disqualified.

Yea, it was a good email.

But it made me wonder where the NCAA draws the line on things like this. Because isn't Sport Illustrated using a players image to sell magazines? Wonder if Bracky sent them a cease and desist letter.

I thought about that too, but I'm sure they got permission first. For that matter, how 'bout GameDay, SEC nation, and every sports television show.

I'm not sure what would be a good definition of a prohibited activity.

An unrelated third party that a player can't control is not going to get a player disqualified. Hell, apparently a parent can't get a player disqualified if he lies and covers for them.

Out of curiosity, is this because of some perceived NCAA rule violation or because of stuff related to the O'Bannon lawsuit? Oh do please answer, Bracky.

What about it doesn't make sense?

Total guess here, but the last sentence doesn't make sense since it isn't logical.

How could it ever be justified that a player should be disqualified for an unassociated private business using the player's name/likeness? The player isn't profiting from it, the player isn't associated with the business, the player had nothing to do with using his name/likeness.

Lets say I own a chain of car washes. I could toss up a bunch of picture signs saying OM players love to use my car washes and they could be suspended(dq'd)? Of course they wouldn't be suspended.
