By being able to offer a world class education on full scholarship to student athletes that otherwise would not have qualified to get into Vanderbilt.

That's how.

If you gave MSU, Arkansas, or LSU Vandy's scholarship situation, there would be no stopping those programs.

Whenever someone argues that Vandy doesn't have an advantage, just ask them what college baseball would look like if one of those 3 programs had Vandy's scholarship situation.

Seriously

Why don't we? Couldn't we set that up, I mean easily.

Let's just set up a scholarship fund or two and then give them to the baseball players. It sure beats complaining about it. What would it cost to totally cover this -- $550,000-$600,000 year. $30,000.00 x 18 or so more players.

If the NCAA says something then we point at Vandy and scream.

The economics of it aren't feasible for public schools with 20+K students.

MSU would go bankrupt in 2 years or so.

Vandy has a 4 billion endowment & only 12K students

Can't do that. All scholarship programs have to be available to the entire student body.

The best solution to this is to up the 11.7.

The only way we could do something like this and get away with it is if we have a fund that pays off the student loans of students who have graduated and are therefore out of eligibility. You would have to pay significantly more than the original tuition cost because they would have to claim the benefit as income on their taxes and interest would accrue. Also, students would nothing but good faith that the fund would be around to pay off their loans upon graduation. But so long as you offered no guarantee or consideration prior to them running out of eligibility, it's not against the NCAA rules.

We had new dorms with athletes in them but were NCAA legal because >50% of the new rooms were for regular students. We could probably do something similar with a scholarship program that a majority of it went to regular students but some of it just happened to go to baseball players. The cigar boys could fund that scholarship program before the fall started.

You are missing it. We ARE offering these scholarships to everyone. It’s just that the baseball players took the trouble to find the correct link to apply, are the most well-rounded students that have applied and have superior leadership skills to the “other” applicants. [wink nod]

We have the money for as many baseball players as we’d ever need, the NCAA just won’t allow us to give it to them.

The only way to compete with Vandy (and soon to be Duke) is to allow 25-30 full scholarships to baseball players.

The angle to play is that the NCAA is restricting access to a college education for somewhere between 10 and 20 young people every year.

The 3 big schools in this state are by far closer to winning a national title in baseball than any other sport. If legislators can’t figure out how to level the playing field, they need to be replaced. Every school would cut into their massive disadvantage and really make things interesting. All the talk about getting rid of coach x and coach y isn’t good enough is crap until said coaches get to complete on an apples to apples basis, which none are in Mississippi or Alabama. Our state needs to get this right.

That's already been argued. The NCAA is more about creating an environment where more schools, particularly those that can't afford to grant 25-35 scholarships for baseball players, have a chance to field competitive teams. They already know the tremendous advantage this gives Vandy, and to a lesser degree other private schools with large endowments and self-determined, self-regulating financial aid policies, but those are few, while the poorer schools that benefit from 11.7 are many.

They know it's a flawed system, they just think it's less flawed than allowing everyone to offer all they need because the vast majority of schools just can't afford it, thus would either not be remotely competitive or perhaps drop baseball entirely.

The somewhat saving grace is that, in baseball, it's been pretty rare that the actual best team wins the NC in any given year. But, when you have the advantages Vandy does, you are far more likely to get to the CWS more often, thus increasing your odds of winning the NC, and more than once.

Strongly Agree

I strongly agree with this. And if pressure is going to applied to the issue,.this is where I think It would be most effective.

That's why the vote on the 3rd Paid Assistant made me so mad. It made me feel that actual game progress has not been realized. That said, the game continues to make strides. It is a shame the NCAA holds it back.

Don’t forget the lottery scholarship that almost every state has been using including Vandy.

The lottery coming to Mississippi is really going to help.

I sure as hell wouldn’t mind taking our last 4 teams that failed in two supers and two cws and providing them with an additional 93.6 scholarships over those 4 years and see how things shake out. I’m sure every team that was remotely close would feel the same way, but hey, that “opportunity” only comes to schools with a 6.4 Billion dollar endowment. Must be nice to curtail the rules so blatantly in the name of education.

What is keeping us from starting up a couple of sports we aren’t currently involved in (water polo, horse riding, etc) and giving the baseball players scholarships through those and having them be walk on baseball players? Or is this what The Bear got away with for awhile? Lemonis could be the coach and we could just forfeit every game. A big one finger salute to Indianapolis.

If the bats had not **** the bed in Omaha, the articles would be about Dudy Noble and how everybody is chasing Mississippi State... It's time to quit whining about the Vanderbilt Scholarship situation.

Does it help, sure. But it's not like every other school doesn't "find" scholarships too. David Price, Mike Minor, and Sonny Gray all committed before Opportunity Vanderbilt existed. Walker Buehler had a 4.3 and 30 on the ACT and deserved a full ride, even if he didn't, his mother is a big time trial lawyer and can pay whatever she wants for college. Carson Fulmer's dad was a lawyer and sent all of his kids to private school. Dansby Swanson had a high school GPA over 4.0 with lots of IB and AP courses and probably had legit scholarships. Kumar Rockers dad makes $500k a year.

I am not going to bother looking up the rest of the success stories, but I dare say they are not pulling kids out of the welfare line... The fact is Corbin is identify and landing top shelf talent, most of whom didn't need the scholarship help.

Their niche is really rich kids or really poor kids. There is a lot of middle ground there that they miss out on, mainly because of their super high tuition.

That's actually our advantage. Partial scholarship goes a lot further at MSU than it does at Vandy.

My bad. But TN Hope, while nice, is not where Vandy has made the advantage gap wide. They have done it on their own.

You're spot on. Vandy's baseball team would look just like their football team on a level playing field, scholarship wise...in other words, they'd suck. If you give all other schools the advantage that Vandy is using, then Vandy would go to the back of the pack pretty quickly.

I agree with you. That said, they have additional tools we don’t have.

I am from TN and had a family friend play ball at UT. He went for free using a combination of a partial baseball scholly and the lottery funding. Vandy can use endowment money and lottery money for their in-state along with baseball scholarship money.

The solution is the NCAA adding more scholarships for baseball. Until then, my point is any funding source we get, albeit from the lottery or anywhere, helps a little. Maybe not much, but helps some.

If it was this easy, everyone who cares about baseball would be doing it. You can't give ANYTHING to baseball players as a State supported school that you don't make available to EVERY student you admit. Vanderbilt gets around this by not using public funds and by using criteria that allows them to pick and choose who meets the 'need based' criteria. Vandy really only answers to their board of trustees. There is no way State supported schools can afford to give scholarships or waive out of state tuition to every student coming into school that would qualify for that using the Vandy "need based" model they use for their baseball players. Just one of the perks of being a rich, private school where you can take advantage of this loophole. Problem is that the NCAA should not be allowing college baseball to be played with such inequities. They would never allow it in football or basketball.

No, its not really even close to the same dollars. In fact, Steve Robertson was making the point on his podcast the other day about how Vanderbilt had helped to wreck the TN baseball program because good players in the State of TN can go to Vandy and get a Vanderbilt degree with a full scholarship playing baseball where TN can't offer that.

Yeah. I know that. What people really dont get in these arguments is that TN HOPE or State’s low tuition only applies to in state kids.

Its funny how the 35 scholarship thing wasn’t as a big of a thing after the 2018 Super Regional in Nashville.

Pitching depth is a greater differntiator in a 4 team double elimination tournament vs a 3 game series

We lost to Vandy due to our bullpen. Adding 23 extra scholarships gets you extra pitching depth.

Just think of what a difference Carter Stewart would have made this year.

How? I haven’t seen anywhere that we are using that money for college scholarships

To be fair, I just read Mississippi is going to use the initial lotto money for roads and not education.

Living out of state, i figured MS would model other Southern states and use it to set up a a scholarship.

I stand corrected - Vandy will continue to have more options and the lottery wont help us.

There are no guarantees in baseball, but just because Vandy doesn’t win the World Series every year, it doesn’t change the fact that they are gaining an unfair advantage by manipulating their opportunity fund.

By your logic, the fact that the Yankees can afford a payroll that’s 60% larger than the league average is no big deal because they’ve only won one title in the last 15 or so years

Funny. I thought the casinahs were supposed to fix the roads and such. Maybe the state should find better road builders if MS has to constantly fix roads after all these years with the money from the casinahs has brought in.

The NCAA just needs to allow every team to distribute 15, not 11.7, scholarships. That incremental increase could make a world of difference
