The players only fight hard if they are hitting open shots. When they aren’t hitting their open shots, and when they play a team that doesn’t allow them to have many open shots, they surrender almost immediately.

They are the very definition of a fragile team, and THAT is the culture that Kenny Payne has instilled in this group.

Nailed it. They made open shots last night. If they missed those early shots and shoot their normal average, they lose by 20 easy last night.

This team is inconsistent, plays poor defense, turns the ball over and only give effort when they are making shots.

Yesterday was probably the best game they played this year. I really thought Miami would beat us by 30-plus.
I realize every player has a bad game now and then but Mike James killed us yesterday. And in the last 15 games or so he has been very solid.
Our centers are killing us on defense. Basically, they don't play any. Not saying they are not trying. They are terrible at defending the pick and role. They don't seem to understand when to switch/not switch.
Wheeler really puzzles me. Great Size and moves really well for a big man but has no clue how to play basketball at either end of the floor. Some of that is on Mack because he had him for two years and there was zero development.

Same here. 30 plus was on the table for sure, but El had a career game and they shot it overall very well. Best shooting game statistically maybe all year. It felt like the WKU game. Shot North of 60% most of the game when they are shooting 42% on the season. Shot above average from 3 as well. Making shots can cure a lot of ills.

Defensively, I agree. I’m not sure what KP’s philosophy or rule is on defending the Pick and Roll (defending in general)… When do they switch verses going over or under screens, hedging the screen, defensive rotation/help, etc… They just look lost on defense.

the players keep fighting hard but the fans have quit, sad
Except for the last game, there are a lot of 20-30 point blowouts with multiple videos of not running back on either side of the court or just standing around. Players don't have any will to play hard from early season to now.. Ellis is the standout of trying.

Miami got 27 free throw attempts. we have to cut down on fouls.
also 22 points off turnovers. guys need to run back hard.

KP has to go hard after the Churchill guy. he visited Mississippi State. talk to Master P about Nil. Hercy Miller is getting $2 million in NIL. i have no idea how or why.

I remain convinced Payne will not return, if he does, UL basketball risks sinking further in a hole that will be difficult to climb out. UL is following the history of DePaul University. After 40 years of successful basketball under Ray Meyer, the NCAA trouble began under his son Joey, and instead of finding the right staff, they hired Pat Kennedy and stayed with him through the mounting losses until the program had lost its urban attraction in Chicago, and ultimately its fan support.

the players are fighting hard?? They hit a few shots last night. However Miami had more rebounds, assists, blocks, steal, and less turnovers.

Miami treated the game for what it was.....a game as a highly favored team against the worst team in the league. If these dudes were fighting they wouldn't be 3-22. Embarrassing

This is exactly the path we're on. Fan bases are built over time. When fans and donors leave they don't always come back. The majority of our fanbase is older and it will be easy for them to find something more fun to do and less expensive not to mention take less of a commitment. Once you get out of the habit of doing something (going to games) it's hard to get excited about getting back into that routine.

Well said CR; as you just described me. After a while, I experienced so much disillusionment and frustration with UL Basketball, that I literally found myself avoiding the games. Could I come back? Sure, but I am not know at what level that will look like. I am not alone, as so many of my friends have filled up those game days with other activities that provide enjoyment.

This season has been so bad it has totally eliminated college hoops for me, at least on the men's side. I've always watched and followed the college hoops season for four decades. Much like college football, I watch all sorts of teams.

But this season, I haven't watched one single college game all the way through except for Louisville and that stopped in December. I can't even get motivated to gamble on the games.

It's going to be a challenge to watch the March madness. It's just so depressing watching other teams knowing Louisville is the worst team from a power conference and worse than most the other division 1 teams.

I don't want to hear the pundits try to explain or comment on Louisville's struggles. It's ridiculous. One dude said Louisville was the best 20 loss team he's ever seen.

I just can't take it, especially with everything else going on in the world from inflation to UFO'S.

Louisville basketball has always been my favorite amongst all my favorite teams. I used to attend games at Freedom Hall with my uncle every year. I bought all the pre season magazines like Street and Smith.

But starting last season it has been more of a burden than a pleasure to watch the Cardinals. This season it has been torture and it has ruined the entire sport for me.

I was one of those fans as well Realville; never saw this coming even when the NCAA investigations began.

Just a year ago Louisville was 4 and 0 in the ACC and Coach Mack was back from suspension. The roster was balanced with big men and guards. Grad transfers were plenty and it looked like the Cards were ready to get back to the dance.

Then it all fell apart as if some curse was inflicted on the program because it has been a total nightmare ever since. Not just bad basketball but the absolute worst basketball.

After the Cards lost to Bellarmine, a poster on this board said the Cards would only win 2 or 3 games. I was one of many who lambasted that post as asinine and idiotic. Yes, we lost to cupcakes but 3 and 28? No way was it that bad. That's totally unprecedented in these parts.

Boy how we were all wrong.

The reason the team fell apart under Mack was because of a chemistry problem and most of the players quit playing. Some of the players played hard and some quit. The reason Malik Williams was in and out of trouble was because he was a Mack supporter and voiced his opinions with the players who quit. That was when I quit following the men’s team because when they quit on their coach they also quit on their fan base.

Morale is both contagious and difficult to reverse without strong leadership. There are always internal issues with team chemistry, the key is having leadership from the staff as well within the team members. Sometimes “addition by subtraction” can be valuable to a team that is struggling, but in the case of UL, several of those who transferred out last year were the ones who we needed to remain. With that said, I do not believe KP has the personality to be a leader, he would more effective as an assistant where he could relate at the same level as the players.
