First of all, if you are ever coming to Starkville and need a place to stay, I recommend the Holiday Inn Express. By far the nicest hotel with the friendliest staff of all the hotels in town. I come to you with this rambling from its business center tonight.

It is now clear to me that Sylvester Croom is the most imcompetent manager of a football game there is in college football today. Call me a pessimist, but I told nearly everyone who knows me on a personal level that there was no way I was going to parade Croom around town on a camel and proclaim him king of the world and the answer to our problems after just one year. I said that I believed last year was a fluke, and it was going to take Croom proving me wrong this year until I believed otherwise. Well, looks like last year was a fluke!!

Why is that at LA Tech, on 4th and 4 from our own 48 yard line with 3:03 to go and 1 time out left, that we punt the ball? Why is it tonight, that on 4th and 14 with just under 4 minutes to go and 2 time outs left on our own 44 yard line (I may be wrong on the line), we go for it against a team who had pretty much stopped us all night?

Why is it that at LA Tech we played a two QB system, but tonight, at a time when Croom should have switched QB'S and given Tyson Lee a chance to spark the offense, he stuck with Wesley Carol the whole night? GIVE THE BACK UP A CHANCE TO PROVIDE A SPARK!

Ray Charles could predict our play calling. How many times on 3rd and 6 or more, did we run a 3 yard or less pass route? Why is it that over the past 5 seasons, this has been the norm?

How many times does a top 10 team gift wrap a game to you in your own back yard, and you say, "No thanks. You take it, we don't want it!" A decent football team takes the gift and wins the game. Unfortunately, we are not even a decent team.

If I play on defense, I am royally pissed at the offense. My only defensive complaint was the fact that we tried to pressure their QB all night with 4 down linemen, and rarely blitzed. Other than that, they get a free pass.

In my line of work, if I don't produce, I get fired. Bottom line, no questions asked. Why is it at Mississippi State, we give our offensive "coach" a $75,000 pay raise and a contract extension after a season in which his offense was ranked 100 and something? WHERE IS THE ACCOUNTABILITY? I hope that our new AD holds our coaching staff accountable and rolls some heads after this year. I am begining to think Croom's contract extension was a huge mistake. Face it people, you may hate Croom, but he's here. We can't afford to buy him out.

As much as I loathed Jackieass Sherrill at the end of his regime, seeing he and the 1998 team on the field tonight sure did make me miss the fun we had those 4 years I was in school.

The season is over with. We were hanging on by a cliff after the LA Tech debacle, and tonight, Auburn delivered the knock out blow!!! If we somehow turn this thing around and make a bowl game, I will make a public apology on here, and will personally send Croom a letter apologizing. BUT IT'S OVER! YOU CAN WRAP THE SEASON IN MAROON AND WHITE

I don't want to hear our fan base spewing their venom telling me "It's OK! There's a lot of football left to be played." It's not OK! With the schedule we play, we should be 3-0 right now!!!

I agree with D@A that that's probably your best post ever. Also, I agree giving Croom an extension last year was a huge mistake. I think he deserved a raise after the year he had last year so that his salary would be comparable to the rest of the conference, but us committing more money plus more years to him was a huge mistake that will bite us in the *** down the road.

Best post you've ever made. Crxxms deserved the raise, but not the extension. It'll force us to suffer one more season of this **** unless Crxxms leaves if Byrne tells him McCorvey must go. Tonight also highlighted the two biggest, most familiar failures of the Crxxms regime: Failure to recruit and SEC caliber K and QB. Carroll is an improvement over Henig, but still not SEC caliber. Henig was a DII QB trying to play SEC football;Carroll is a WAC QB trying to play SEC football. Don't get me started on **** Brick Carlson. McAdams had the game of his life tonight, can't blame him. I feel so bad for the D. They deserve so much better than the **** they're getting from our xffense.

I've said before, last year Croom should have been given a bonus with a promise of a raise if he could repeat this year nothing more. Oh and it's obvious the offense and staff didn't stay at the Holiday Inn Express.

Going for it on 4th & 14 Sat night reminded me of the brilliant game management against Georgia a few years ago. 4th & short near their 40 go for it, three plays later....4th and short near their 30...punt.

These dudes have no idea how to manage a game...and anyone defending their playcalling is a bigger dubmass.

I am 50/50 on that call. The other way of looking at it is when will you get the ball at the 50 yard line again.

Just the complete ineptitude of the offense is what is more troubling.

It was 4th and 15. If it was 4th and 5 then yeah you might go for it. Our offense last night could not move the ball 15 yards in one play and the defense was playing fabulous, why not push them back into their own territory aGAIN and try to stop them again.

is I don't fault either decision. Your logic makes complete sense but at the same time, I have no problem with going for it in that situation.

And maybe this is Croom being guilty of listening to the fans ***** because how many of us bitched when we didn't go for it aGAINST LA Tech.

chance are damn good that if you punt and use your time outs, you'll get the ball 1st and 10 from the 50 about a minute later. Going for it on 4th and 15 and then throwing the bomb with a weak-armed QB were clear signs to me that our coaching staff panicked big-time and didn't have a clue how to try to win the game.

I am agreeing with what people are saying. But that play call is not what I am most upset about and I can see the other side of the argument.

It was the dumbest single in-game coaching decision Croom's made since he's been here and had virtually no chance of succeeding. I do agree with you that it's a lot more troubling that our offense only gained 116 yards all freaking night, but with the defense playing like it was and the offense stopped cold all night, in that situation you punt and play defense every damn time.

was 4th and 1 in the 3rd quarter and we roll out Carroll thus limiting ourselves to one side of the field and PASS THE BALL!!!!

is we were probably only 12 plays away from winning this game. That's 6 less than LA Tech.

If it were 4th and 2min to go then sure but we were holding them on D. 4min left and you already couldn't get the 1st down on 4th and 1, get real. After all the times he's punted late in the game he picked one hell of a time to change. I say this knowing full well that our offense was to inept to do anything about it regardless of when we got the ball back. Our only real hope was pining them deep with a punt and hoping for another safety and a 4-3 win.

my thought at the time was that our best chance to score was to pin them deep in their own territory and hope for a defensive TD or another safety.

Seriously, AU could've given us the ball 1st and goal at their 5 every possession and we wouldn't have put a single offensive point on the board all night.

You must've lost your damn mind. That was the single worst coaching decision I've ever seen. You say you can see the other side of the argument, well I can argue for punting from the 30 but that wouldn't make it right or sensible. You also said one of the reasons Croom did it was because of all the bitching we've done about not going for it in the past. If that's true, he has even less business being a head coach in Div I than even we're giving him credit for. We had made 15 yards maybe one or two plays the whole %*@#%+! game. Our defense was dominant. We definitely would've gotten it back at midfield one minute later. It was an inexcusable decision. It was worse than what Ed Orgeron did against us last season, and he got fired for it.

those decisions are made based on the way the game had gone up to that point... you look at matchups and where your strengths are.. that decision to go for it would have been the right one if it had been a night where AU had been rolling offensively which would have meant that the chances of us getting the ball back would have been next to nothing.. that was not the case.. we had time outs....coupled with the fact that our offensive gave us absolutely no chance of completing a 15 yrd pass play, it was prolly the stupidist play call I've ever seen..

Let's not forget we were a big fat o-fer on third down conversions in the game! And Croom and Co. really thought we could get 4th & 15? 4th and 1-6 maybe...but 15?

Our coaches have their head up their ***. End of story.

Croom didn't make the call to go for it on 4th down.....HE DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS 4TH DOWN! If you go back and watch it, he doesn't realize that Tubby declined the penalty. Croom thinks it is 3rd down. Which is indicative of a much bigger problem than the fact that he made an idiotic call....our head coach doesn't have a clue what is going on. He is so in over his head that he can't even see the surface.

...we go for it on 4th and 15 instead of trying to pin them inside the 5 for the 3rd time. Even if we had seen a traditional McAdams punt, their returner would be rattled trying to catch the ball in that situation.

it was so predictable. I don't know that much about football, but as soon as I saw Hoskins come on the field, I knew it was the play action roll out to the fullback in the flat. They were all over that so Carroll had to throw to the secondary receiver. its a great play call if it hasn't been your go to play on 4th and short for 5 years. Andy coaching staff that has ever seen any film on us would know that's what we like to run.

where we handed the ball off deep in the backfield and they just clogged everything up. Croom blamed it on a missed block. No ****. Just about everyone missed their block.

Great post extreme.

Another good point from a post from "elsewhere"
---------------------------------------------------------------
"From that field position if we punt a strong chance the ball goes into the end zone and to me it's not that big of a gain." Croom

The ball was on our 48 yard line. Fourth and 15. It would take a 52 yard kick to reach the end zone. McAdams had kicked 53 yards from our 43, and 52 yards from our 45, both into the wind. This kick would have to be this long to reach the end zone, which would still be a gain of 32 yards in field position.. More than likely it would have been downed inside the 20 and maybe even inside the 10. The quoted arguement doesn't hold up.
--------------------------------------------------------------

and one other tidbit...concerning 4th and 1

What everybody saw was a hopeless throw to a covered tight end who just a couple of days earlier finally shed the cast on his right hand. But as I asked Carroll and he confirmed, that wasn't the call. It was to be a flip to the fullback skinning off the corner with lots of green in front and the tight end blocking the only tackler in sight. A perfect call, that developed perfectly at 10 positions.

Just not the one that mattered most as the fullback got hung up at the line and couldn't get out in the open.

"The thing about offense, if one guy makes a mistake you've got a problem."

Pretty bad call. 4th and 15? Our absolute best offensive play is to punt and hope it hit's an opposing player in the back, that's what we should've tried in that situation.
And 12 plays away from winning the game? We hit that 1 deep ball to McRae at the end, we win, it's that simple. I can't believe this defense still puts forth effort. That tells me more about this team and coaching staff than anything. The fact that they have the discipline to still play hard and well when the offense isn't producing anything shows maturity and good coaching. That defensive performance excites me.
