Like I posted, your being very, very simplistic. Many factors moved the south rightward. Viet Nam War being a huge one. The South did not care for libs trashing the war, rioting, treating our returning soldiers horribly. They did not care for all the spending of the Great Society. They did not like the 1968 riots at the Dem convention. Many, many factors.

Civil Rights - There is no debating here. Nixon supported desegregation. Yes. However, he was willing to appoint conservatives who would integrate SLOWLY to appease southerners and gain Republican votes for himself and the House and Senate. FACT!
I've always stated that the year 1968 may have been the most decisive year in American history. That year alone there were so many historical and life altering events. Tet Offensive, RFK, MLK, riots.......
Wrong, the South favored the war, far more than the North. They favored our troops, far more than the North. They were fiscally conservative and Johnson's Great Society and all that spending turned them off. The South hated the riots. They hated the Dem Convention of 1968 and the accompanying riots. Many factors you simply choose to ignore because they don't fit your storyline.

Thomas Jefferson said that society could benefit from a revolution every once in a while. The problem with conservatives and their thinking is that they NEVER want revolution ("change"). They are never open to new ideas, or how life changes. Your "Party of Lincoln" was not the Republican Party......Lincoln and Stevens were the "radical" Republicans.....oops....did the word "radical" come out? Why were they "radical"? Because they wanted a "revolution" in our society......EQUALITY for all......and the regular Republicans did not want change too quickly. Your post makes little sense as always. The original post was all about libs shutting down free speech and then you cite a group from the 1700's to justify their actions. Then you cite the need for revolution to justify their actions. This is fascism, pure and simple. Shutting down speech you don't like. You can deflect all you want, but libs shutting down speech are the fascists.
Conservatives definitely want change, but change that is beneficial to mankind. Libs seem to want change intended to impose their will on others, deny others their rights under the Constitution.

I don't even know where to start, this is so dumb. I did not say liberal democrats in the South, I said Democrats. Yes, the South generally did not care for the anti-war protests, riots, bombings, cop killings, anti-soldier attitudes of the North and that was a key factor in their switching parties and allegiances.
Secondly, libs on campus are using violence to shut down speech. And you approve of this. Wow. What they are doing is not speech. It is violence and the threat of violence to stop free speech. I simply can't believe you are defending this. So in you mind, threats is free speech. Riots are free speech. Assaults are free speech. Wow. And Condi Rice engages in hate speech? Ben Carson? Jason Riley? Ben Shapiro? Dr. Charles Murray? All hate speech? BTW, the Constitution absolutely defends the right to engage in hate speech, but not violence or the threat of violence.

My guess is that many had both types of leanings depending on the subject. Most southern Dems, for example, supported the war in Viet Nam and the troops, that makes them conservative. On other issues, they may well have had liberal leanings. I don't thing they were monolithic in their thinking.
I defended protest, the right to protest. I never defended violence of any kind or fascism. And I know you've heard me plenty of times say these speakers should be allowed. You are putting words in my mouth then drawing conclusions based on your own internal delusion. Get a grip. There's nothing wrong with student s protesting a speaker they disagree with, it's their campus. Violence is never a solution. I didn't think I had to say that.
