Sign Kirk Cousins to a massive deal, then draft a QB at #8? And not a QB anyone had in the top 10.

Cousins' agent said he's confused by the pick and is concerned because it doesn't help the Falcons this season.

It's a raw deal for Penix as he'll be 28 when Cousins' current deal runs out. He could have gone somewhere with an opportunity to play much sooner.

Just a really, really puzzling pick. Being called the biggest head-scratcher in the last 10 drafts.

If there is a way to screw something up, the Coons will find the way to screw it up the absolute most it can be screwed up. Atlanta is Loserville, USA.

Years of observation have led to this conclusion.

It looks like a bad decision for everyone.

Tons of quality players were available that would have filled positions of immediate need. Bad for the Falcons.

Cousins likely went there thinking the Falcons would use the draft to upgrade the roster around him. Bad for Cousins.

Penix is already 24 (or soon will be) and is gonna be pushing 30 by the time Cousins contracts is up. Bad for Penix.

From the Falcon's perspective, I think, its a sign they are second guessing what they got themselves into with Kurt Cousins.

Their GM says they wont pick this high again for several years, and maybe he is right, he may also be saying they may lose a future first rnd pick to the Vikings for tampering with Cousins. :)

In Cousins you have a QB who will be 36 by the time the NFL Season starts, coming off a Achillies Tendon injury

You always hear the term its a copy cat league, and they seem to be copying the Packers strategy with Love, for sure.

They also seem to be treating this as 2 year deal with Cousins

2024: $25 million cap hit

2025: $40 million cap hit

2026: $57.5 million cap hit ($25 million dead money)

2026: $57.5 million cap hit ($12.5 million dead money)

It’s effectively a two year deal

In year one, Cousins is going to be counting against the cap to the tune of $25 million. That number is likely to settle out as a middle-of-the-road cap hit somewhere between 14th-18th among NFL quarterbacks. Given that the Falcons will expect Cousins to play like a borderline top 10 player, something he was on track to do last year, that’s a very reasonable hit.

That 2025 number balloons, but will be closer to the 10th highest hit than the 5th highest when all is said and done, and the Falcons figure to have more cap space to play with next year. The net effect is that the Falcons are paying Cousins quite well but not at, say, a top five level in 2024 and 2025, when they clearly expect to field a contending team. Cousins’ hits will make it easier to do that.

The two $57.5 million cap hits and the dramatic decrease in dead money in 2026 and 2027 tell you the Falcons are treating this contract like a two year deal. That’s wise, given that Cousins will be 38 years old by 2026, and we’ll talk more about that in a moment.

Penix also has his injury history

What will be hilarious is if both guys get injured for overlapping time periods and cant play, and they have to play some scrub!! :)

Yeah, most of Cousins' guaranteed money is in the first 2 years. MAYBE that's what's going into their thinking. If so, they better plan on winning A LOT over the next 2 years.

As a nominal Falcons fan I was cautiously optimistic for 2024 once they signed Cousins. He's a legit quarterback that shouldn't just throw games away like Ridder did last year. I thought the team would pick up some real pieces to improve the roster in the draft. Instead they draft Penix? I still don't understand the move. Just doesn't make sense.

And I like Penix. I think he's a really good quarterback. He was a ton of fun to watch at Washington.

Ever heard of the Braves?
Yes, they are the Atlanta baseball team that fades late. In 57 seasons they have 23 division titles, 6 National League pennants and 2 World Series championships.

Ever heard of the Hawks? How about the Georgia tech yellow jackets?

It is one of the great underachievements in the history of pro sports that the 1990s Braves only won 1 WS title.

Georgia Tech has more SEC championships than South Carolina and they've been out of the conference for 60 years. Hard to take shots at the Jackets from Columbia, despite their more recent pitifulness.

I am familiar with the Braves history. Still wouldn't call them losers.
