I'm in a standard ESPN keeper league and over the years have been able to put together some pretty good keepers. I know who my first 4 are going to be: Crawford, Longoria, Tulo, Cargo. I'm having trouble deciding on the 5th: Fielder, McCutchen, Bautista, or Posey*.

The 2 ways I'm leaning:
1.) My first 4 keepers are good enough that I can keep Posey. Even though he might not be better than Fielder this year, he would be great to have down the road.
2.) Fielder will bounce back in a contract year and I'd kick myself for not keeping him

Thoughts?
*disclaimer - I have a Prince Fielder sized man-crush on Buster Posey

I don't suspect he will regress and undergo a sophomore slump.

Fielder is great for counting numbers but the avg is not there. Not that you expect it. But first base is deeper than catcher. So would you rather have Fielder and say.....Mike Napoli or Posey and say Paul Konerko.

I don't think you can go wrong. I just prefer having players I like on my team.

He may go through a soph slump but he is your value over the next 5 years. I have him as a keeper on my team also.

Thanks for contacting The Answer Guys.

You are sort of discounting McCutchen here too. he is a very good young
player, though he is not a great fit as he will be similar to Crawford.
Fielder is tempting, but while he will hit for power you cannot assume
even 40 HR. With the ability to lock up Posey for another 4 years you
keep Posey.

Roto. 10. No.

I'd probably go with Posey too then. In an ideal world, I'd deal Cargo for a pick and keep McCutch... but you have to keep Cargo if you cannot trade him.

I understand why you like Posey. I like him too. But I'd keep McCutcheon instead for a couple of reasons...<div>
</div><div>1. Steals are a really valuable commodity and with Crawford & McCutcheon you wouldn't have to chase after steals in the draft.</div><div>2. With your OF set (Gonzalez, Crawford, McCutcheon) you can concentrate on other positions of need.</div><div>3. You can find a catcher much later in the draft that will approximate what Posey gives you (Soto & Santana come to mind).</div><div>

now it is power... it is so hard to find a OF that will hit 20+ and bat .300 ...most OF run more now

I hesitate to say keep a C, because it is so deep this year or not a lot of separation in a 10 team league unless you are Joe Mauer.
I have never been a fan of Fielder, but his numbers have been legit.
I think Andrew is going to be great, but would rather have Cargo

I don't think you can go wrong, but I don't think I would keep Posey in a 10 team format

uh fielder fielder fielder. there aren't many guys capable of hitting 50 HRs in the post-roids era. fielder is one. posey is good, but you are looking at a .300-25-90 type guy plus if he stays at catcher the increased injury threat + early degradation of skills. <div>
</div><div>i'd also trade mccutchen for a pick upgrade. if you don't get bites or a good upgrade for him though, i wouldn't hesitate to sell off cargo (awful walk/k rates have me weary of a repeat) and keep mccutchen.</div>

fielder isn'[t gonna hurt your avg though either. his career is .279, so he'll be right around your team avg. it's damn near impossible to find a 40-100 guy on the wire though. if you need avg later in the year, you can find 20 guys who will give you an empty .300+ avg though to help you out at positions like 2B, C, or SS.

just picked Fielder. I looked at the players I think will be available when my pick finally comes around. They way the rankings look, I would have no shot at drafting Fielder, but if people stick closely to the rankings I'll have a shot at keeping Fielder and drafting Posey.

good move. <div>
</div><div>personally i'm a punt catcher kinda guy. i'll gladly take soto or napoli or someone much later in the draft and still get 80+% of posey's production. to me the drop between posey and soto or napoli is much much smaller than the drop from fielder to konerko or lester to javier vazquez or something, and you inherently add a lot of injury risk with catchers.</div><div>
</div><div>check out razzball.com, by far my favorite fantasy site, and grey (one of the guys that writes it) is seriously hilarious. during his in season daily recaps, i literally laugh out loud 2-3 times.</div>

...is that a Cardinal fan hoping, or do you see something you really like in his game? I don't know a lot about him in regards to some of the others.

not a cards fan. pretty much what dawgs said. I think he's got potential to be a 5 tool guy. I like Alvarez but he supposedly put on 15 lbs of fat during the offseason.
