In honor of the upcoming holiday season, what is your favorite horror film franchise? For me it's hard to pick one, but I'm going to go with the 'Halloween' series of movies. Although there are some serious duds in there, there are a few of them that I really like. The Universal films come in a close second for me.

I'm a big fan of the porn + horror genre. The whole My *** is Haunted franchise is pure gold.

Halloween by far minus part III, Resurrection and the Zombie remakes.

Halloween, II, IV, V, Curse of Michael Myers and H2O were all enjoyable to me. II is the freakiest

Growing up I would say Friday the 13th, but at my age now its crazy watching them now and seeing how corny those films were. The first Nightmare on Elm Street was legendary, but after that became a complete joke of a franchise. Everyone knew it at the time, but it was another Freddie movie so you had to see it. The second old Texas Chainsaw was one of the worst horror movies ever made. The remakes were not terrible.

At least for me, I have to go with Halloween. Watching it when I was young and even today the first 2 still are awesome. The rest were so-so, but not as terrible as the other franchises. Zombie's remakes were pretty bad though.

Alien, is the best horror movie ever made. It's even great today and one of the few horror movies used to teach film making

Man I liked H3. Once you get by the fact that it has zero to do with Halloween, it's not bad. I thought 5 and 6 were garbage. And honestly, I never loved 1 and 2 to begin with. Respect the hell out of them and Carpenter.. but I think I'd fall asleep if Halloween was on right now.

I'd probably go with FTT at this point. The best kills, a pretty damn good remake, and an ultimate "cheese" entry in JasonX.

NOES was pretty good too. Probably the most creative kills, but the later entries kind of sucked. And the reboot was just lame.

Hellraiser gets my vote for the scariest. The scariest NOES/Halloween/FTT doesn't even touch the tamest Hellraiser. Eff those movies. I even had the chance to watch one last night and I pussied out.

There should be a "Movies derived from King novels / stories" option. I wouldn't vote for it but it's a valid and formidable grouping, I think.

To clear up any confusion out there that might exist - Halloween III is fantastic. Do not hate or it will be taken as an act of war.

Interesting story and the best part.....
The bad guys win.

Dawn of the Dead will always be special to me bacause my cool aunt took me to it when I was 10. I started sleeping again when I was 12.
You were like me when I saw The Exorcist at age 12. FORGET being 'grown up', there was a night lite next to my bed the rest of the year!

Along these lines, Tales From the Crypt. That crypt keeper was a real character!

Halloween is more original and creepier so it's the best in my opinion (1 & 2 anyhow). Michael Myers is my favorite character and the theme song is classic. Jason's character is the only thing I really like about the Friday the 13th franchise, most of those movies are pretty corny. The first Nightmare on Elm Street is okay.

'Halloween III' is a great movie. It has a pretty good story and was done quite well actually. It gets so much flack because of the no Michael Myers angle (which isn't totally true since Micheal DOES make an appearance during a commercial/showing of the original 'Halloween' playing on TV a couple of times during the film). The filmmakers original intent was to create a Halloween holiday themed anthology film series which was to introduce a new horror film each year revolving around the holiday. It probably would've taken off if they had not used the 'Halloween' name in conjunction with it.

I actually went to the original Michael Myers house in Pasadena back in 2007. IT was like an insurance company office or something then. Didn't care how awkward I appeared, I walked the steps just like Michael Myers did in the film.

Glad there are other intelligent species here who also appreciate the greatness that is Halloween 3: Season Of The Witch. Just not an October without that masterpiece appearing on random channels late at night.

turn it off...turn it off....turn it off!!!

May start a general horror movie thread. Been perusing the ol' Netflix and trying to cram 'em in.

Just watched All Cheerleaders Must Die and Animal. Nothing great. But the former had lots of bounciness to it and Animal had moderately intelligent victims.

House of the Devil, You're Next, and the director tandem of Ti West and Adam Winguard is pretty damn good right now. Real throw-back style movies. Back to the basics. Gore, great sound, directing, and cinematography. His concepts and story are never ground breaking (although a few are close), but they are solid, satisfying horror movies. And that's harder and harder to come by these days with the horror genre.

Netflix? Hard to tell. They made a change to their content, and for whatever reason, they only show 50 or so Horror Movies on the genre slider. Yet, when I search for Hellraiser, they have all of them. I use my buddies Netflix so not too familiar navigating it.. but I can't seem to find the entire library for one genre.

Very annoying. I should be able to browse an entire genre, not just 50 titles. I'd bet at least SOME of the Halloweens are on there though.

Dude, I really liked H20. Resurrection is one of the worst films ever. Freaking Busta Rhymes getting the best of Mike with Kung-Fu? Psst.

I don't really have a favorite movie series. I like most all of them. I am a big fan of horror movies. I do have a favorite horror movie villain though and that is Freddy Krueger. It is the perfect movie villain. He gets you at night in your sleep. Every kid starts off scared of the dark and having bad dreams and then you grow up and it happens all over again. This time your bad dreams can kill you.

Although it might be more sci-fi then horror, I also am a big fan of the Predator.

And now I'm off to see if I can find that song from their commercial and use it as a ring tone...

Found it and it is creepy as touch......

I remember everyone talking about that when I was a kid. My friend was from a devout catholic family and even his parents were freaked out about it. I doubt there has been any other movie in my lifetime have that kind of effect. Well, Mandingo was a big deal but that was about something else I didn't understand at the time.

I always loved it as well. Seeing that annoying family (especially the bratty son) getting their just due during the "test run" was great. The jingle is unforgettable as well.

How many of the Halloweens are on there?

Technically, there are 10 Halloween films (only 9 if you just count the Michael Myers ones) -
Halloween
Halloween II
Halloween III
Halloween 4
Halloween 5
Halloween 6
Halloween H20
Halloween Ressurection
Halloween (Zombie)
Halloween II (Zombie)

I looked yesterday. There are only a few Halloweens on there. And also found their entire horror "category".. and it's utter garbage. Maybe 150 movies? For the biggest and longest running movie streaming service? Pathetic. And the titles are weak. As for as AAA titles, it had The Exorcist, Rosemary's Baby.. that's about it. Then some solid horror movies like The Hellraisers and The Re-Animator.. and a few of the weaker Halloweens/FTTs/NOES.. and then B and C-rate crap.

As for new horror movies, the only thing that stuck out was The Babadook and You're Next. So not too bad in that area, but could have used It Follows, Cabin In The Woods, etc.

The Cabin In The Woods had been on Netflix for a long time. I guess they finally had to take it down. The Netflix app sucks in trying to see what they offer. I don't know why they can't set it up to show all the movies that are available. They should have it to where you pick the genre first without piling all the different genres on the screen at once. Plus I hate how it adds movies and says "Because you watched __________."
